Review

'Matt Logan leaps from the page as a man certain of his abilities, but unsure of his motives. He is a compelling character whose very flaws help guide us through the treacherous landscape where journalism, war, espionage, diplomacy and the secret world of the Special Forces collide. The results are explosive, the outcome never certain, the tension constant'
--Tim Marshall, Foreign Affairs Editor, SKY News

'a gripping read . . . plenty of daring do, and it reeks of authenticity . . .' --Sunday Mercury

'The plot twists and red herrings lead up to an exciting and explosive conclusion . . . This is a thoroughly good read . . .'
--British Army Rumour Service (ARRSE)

Product Description

Disillusioned SAS veteran Matt Logan is struggling on civvy street. The life he dreams of can be his - if he takes a private security job with the American commander who ended his military career. But when a seemingly random act of terror destroys everything Matt holds dear, the only way to settle the score is to sell his soul.

Matt returns to the murky world of Black Ops. But this time, he's not part of an elite crew. To find and kill an elusive insurgent leader, he must go undercover in Pakistan to single-handedly unravel a jihadist network more complex than he realizes and closer than he knows. Stalked by fundamentalists and Pakistani intelligence, Matt ends up a pawn in a conspiracy to redraw the boundaries of global power; a secret war that is ripping a nation apart. But not the one he thinks ...From ex-SAS soldier and bestselling author Bob Shepherd comes an action thriller torn from tomorrow's headlines. A heart-pumping journey through the breeding grounds of Islamic terrorism, The Good Jihadist combines the intrigue of a spy novel with all the adrenaline you'd expect from an elite warrior turned writer.

Praise for The Infidel 'The Infidel is an intelligent can't-put-it-down adventure story written by an author who knows the heart and guts of NATO's war in Afghanistan. If you want to know what we're up against, read this book' Karl Marlantes - Author of the US Blockbuster Matterhorn '

...Bob's fingertips drip with the detail readers devour - from weapons and tactics to people and places. However, his knowledge is bang up to date and his insight into the political and social effects of military campaigns rival any Newsnight commentator' Stephen Armstrong - Sunday Times journalist and author of War plc

This book is a real eye opener about the complexities of regions such as Afghanistan and Pakistan. Matt Logan is a member of the worlds finest special forces, the SAS. After events lead to him leaving the Regiment, he has the chance to join a private security firm and undertake black ops once more, but this means joining a group led by the American commander who eneded his SAS carreer. An horrific incident is the driving force behind Matt and this seeking of revenge leads him into a world where no one is who they seem to be and the lines in the sand are ever blurred.
Although a fictional book, using his 22 years in the SAS and his knowledge gained from around 17 years in the private security trade, Bob embeleshes his books with the kind of details and passion only gained from experience. I for one never knew there were more than one type of Taliban and that China has a massive vested interest in places such as Afghanistan. As with many great stories, you never really know who is on who's side and which people can or can't be trusted. I love the book, and if you enjoy it too, then get his first book 'The Circuit' and his second ' The Infidel'. The first is about his time in private security giving close protection to many media and VIP types and the second is his first fictional novel. I guarantee it will open your eyes to things you never knew went on. Fingers crossed there's many more to come.

Format:Hardcover
Bob Shephard has written another first class novel, this time set in Pakistan as we follow the story of disgruntled SAS veteran Matt Logan, who is hunting an insurgent leader tied to a horrific act of terror for which Matt is seeking revenge. Everything seems clear-cut at first, but he increasingly discovers this not to be the case and uncovers a conspiracy larger than he ever thought possible.

Shephard has again written a book that was impossible for me to put down, and is gripping and believable in equal measure. I got a sense (as with all of his books) that he has really lived the SAS life for real, and knows what he is talking about in regards to current affairs and security matters. His story-writing leads us to believe one thing and later reveal it to be another, which is always a mark of superb and skillful story-writing.

A much better read than Chris Ryan in every way!

Evolution 14 Oct 2011
Format:Paperback
This genre has been very successful and dominated by other special forces background people/ writers such as 'Ryan' and 'McNab'.
However for the main part those novels tend to fictional at all levels, very much a case of sit back and be entertained. What we are recieving from Robert Shepherd is the evolution of that format, fictional characters in very hazardous but factual environments.
And thats why this novel works so well as it feeds not only the need for a story with personalities you can believe and form relationships with but also it educates and provides clear thinking on dark subjects that are difficult and at the same time influential, often lying under the surface where they are not easily translated into a story line. And rarely touched on by mainstream media. Robert Shepherd manages this extremely well providing an adult real time theme with underpinning facts on the complexities of the Afghan / Pakistan border region. This sort of story cannot be simply thought up and penned into a novel, you have to have been there, operated there and survived there. Robert Shepherd has done that, resulting in an excellent novel.
Best yet.
