Easy to flick through to find the area in question, that you may be wishing to dine in.

My only gripe being that there are hardly any pages dedicated to the Midlands, in whole just two pages and that is including Birmingham. Would be good if a few places for fine dining could be found in the Staffordshire area that we don't know about already. The South/London seems to win hands down in this book, which is great if wishing to sample fine food in that area. So if out for a weekend break there is no doubting about where to eat, just which one in particular as there are so many places mentioned.

It is a good guide book, which is easy to read, what I also liked is that there are also web sites for most of the eating places. So more can be found about the various places before visiting. Always useful to get other people's views before booking a place if very expensive and out of your own local area.

I have only bought one of these guides many years ago, but this one has been greatly improved and a good useful book to have if you like to travel and enjoy good food. There maybe places in it that you have already visited and maybe a few new ones to try out.

A good enough reason to try out different eating places.

I buy all the restaurant guides - Michelin, The Good Food Guide, Harden's and Zagat, etc. Michelin is perhaps the most prestigious and of course focusses on fine dining; Harden's is based on Joe Public reviewers' opinions but has more listings; The GFG covers London and other counties and tends to be more balanced and detailed; whereas Zagat's entries are short and filled with quotes (from reviewers) and tend to be a bit judgemental - I don't always agree with their opinions.
The Good Food Guide has been going for over 60 years and has built a justly deserved reputation for comprehensiveness and balance.
The Guide starts with a comprehensive introduction and listing of recent awards. It kicks off the reviews with London and then goes through the English regions, then Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. What I like about the GFG compared to all other guides is - aside from the problem of its relatively large size - it is authoritative, well written and balanced. Some of other guides tend to condemn restaurants because one or two diners have a had a bad time. The GFG also has plenty of detail about each restaurant and more detail about dishes, prices and wine.
It's difficult to beat with a real pedigree - if you have a large pocket to carry it!

This is a handy reference guide - but don't think that if you rely on it you'll find every excellent eating establishment in the country. For me, there are some real omissions (actually quite glad about that - don't want them getting overrun!) but it's still a good starting point. The restaurants recommended tend, on the whole, to be on the pricey side, so not one for cheap-eats.
