When Peter Wright's father dies he leaves his entire fortune to Peter's best friend Jack. Over a few weeks in the summer of 1959 the consequences of the old man's legacy seriously affect three men s lives, Jack, who has brought up his three children alone since his wife was killed, Wright's solicitor Harry, who is trying to rebuild his relationship with his estranged son Guy, and Peter himself, whose friendship with Jack is threatened by his father's death and the terrible secrets he has kept since his return from the Japanese POW camps. The Good Father explores the nature of fatherhood and the bonds between fathers and their children in a gripping story of love, betrayal and adultery.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read 28 Dec 2007
Format:Paperback
I received the book for Christmas and found it a great read. Not a book I would have picked myself but found I could not put it down once I had started it. What I liked about the book is its fast pace and how well the characters are interwoven and work so well as a group. The book captures the characters really well and in particular Peter and how he handles life after his return from the war. The book does not lie when it says it is a gripping story of love, betrayal and adultery. I would be interested in other peoples view on who they think the good father was? For me it would have to be Jack. Highly enjoyable - recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars The story of three fathers 13 May 2012
Format:Paperback
Three different fathers and their children are interwined in this story, set in the late 1950s. The war has finished but has left scars on their lives, Harry has an ill German wife, and has had an affair with Val, the love of his life he believes. Jack lost his wife in a car accident leaving him with three children he doesn't really care about, and now he's enagged to marry Val - on the rebound from Harry. Peter is affected by the death of his nasty, manipulative father and so their lives are entwined as Harry the solicitor tells Peter he's homeless because his father has left all to his best friend JAck as a final revenge. How will they all get on with their lives and survive? Not one of her better books - I prefer "The Boy I love" and "Paper Moon". I just wish that writers didn't feel the need to add sex scenes in books that don't need it. This book is well written enough to succees without the need to include sexual description, which then reduces it to the level of a thrill seeker or novel of titillation.
