Review

“Read it now, and then make your friends buy their own copies. You’ll thank me someday.”—Neil Gaiman
“The funniest writer in Britain today.”—"GQ
"“Millar offers fiercely funny (and often inebriated) Scottish fairies, a poignant love story, cultural conflicts, and the plight of the homeless in this fey urban fantasy.”—"Publishers Weekly" (starred review)
“Undeniably brilliant.”—"The Guardian "(UK)

Product Description

Morag and Heather, two eighteen-inch fairies with swords, green kilts and badly dyed hair fly through the window of the worst violinist in New York, an overweight and antisocial type named Dinnie, and vomit on his carpet. Who they are, how they came to New York and what this has to do with the lovely Kerry - who lives across the street, and has Crohn's Disease, and is making a flower alphabet - and what this has to do with the other fairies (of all nationalities) of New York, not to mention the poor repressed fairies of Britain, is the subject of this book. It has a war in it, and a most unusual production of Shakespeare's A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM and Johnny Thunders' New York Dolls guitar solos. What more could anyone desire from a book?

Masterpiece! 28 Feb 2006
By kehs TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
This is a fantastic book that should never have been allowed to go out of print. The two main fairies are banished from Scotland and end up in New York where they cause chaos by declaring open warfare amongst the fairy community there.Sex, drugs and anarchy reign - definitely not your average fairy tale! A masterpiece from Martin Millar, don't miss this chance of buying a copy.

A mixed bag. 30 April 2012
Format:Paperback
This is a very unusual story and to be perfectly honest I'm not entirely sure how much I enjoyed it. It has a fairly interesting plot line and the characters were interesting and varied. However, at times it was very repetitive which I found very disconcerting. I'm not sure if the author was making a point about the nature of life, or if it was just for comic effect but I think that after a while it had just gone a bit far. But overall this is a funny book and a very quick read, so if you're looking for something quirky and light, I'd recommend it.

Fabulous 11 Mar 2012
Format:Paperback
This is a fantastic, fun uplifting book. Its is gloriously silly in places and had me harping back to my hippyish youth on many an occasion. Despite being about fairies the characters are often identifiable. This book helped me to see a lighter side of life, thanks Martin Miller.

so badly written
I just cant understand what people see in this book. It's badly written, the plot is one dimensional, the charactirsation is stereotyped and unoriginal!

Stop clapping we don't want those fairies to live...
Absolutely horrendous novel. So bad I had to write a review to stop others wasting their money. Here are a few of its many and varied problems:

Good Title
I liked the idea of this. Two punk fairies causing havoc in New York, and the title was a good hook. Unfortunately that's where the good stuff ends as far as I'm concerned. Read more

Anarchic, chaotic and very, very funny!
It is fair to say that any book with a glowing recommendation from Neil Gaiman deserves to be read. I am very glad I did because this was possibly the funniest book I have read in... Read more

Don't bother
The concept, that a group of British fairies (the kind with wings) turn up in New York and cause havoc is cute if silly. Unfortunately the book is a bit of a bore.

Good Grief
If you're expecting nice Victorianised Flower Fairies, don't go near this book! What you get are flawed characters in a slight but enjoyable tale of mayhem in New York. Read more
