Having purchased most of the Frank Black / Black Francis albums, I left this one for near last because for several reasons: strange title; a lot of keyboard synthetic sounds on first previews; and as the soundtrack to a silent movie, the expectation that it might have too much "filler" material. I was mistaken. The title fits the songs' themes in the silent film of the same name. The keyboard synthetics add to the overall feel or sound of the album. Other than a couple short instrumental breaks, most of the album is comprised of original Black Francis songs--unlike anything he's done before.
As The Golem may be some creature borne of dark, alluring magic, this album creates its own allure, with thoughtful, evocative, sometimes amusing lyrics and intriguing sounds.
Some of the songs have almost a 60s feel, with horns on "You're Gonna Pay," and flute sounds on "The Maharal" (reprise).
Overall this album is a pleasant surprise. Preview it on BlackFrancis.net.
