After James Carr, Spencer Wiggins was the leading light in the Goldwax stable. Able to sing blues or soul this is a superb collection. Spencer Wiggins learned his trade in gospel groups and honed his act during years on the club circuit. What we have here is the bulk of his recordings from the mid-60s with afew outtakes and unreleased gems besides. Tracks like He's Too Old and Soul City USA showcase Wiggins' ability with faster numbers but it is the slow burners that really justiy puchase.Highlights include a fine version of the oft-recorded Take Me Just As I Am and and I Never Loved A Woman but the real stunner, the song that will bristle the neck hairs is Up Tight Good Woman. The only slight drawback is that a deal to include tracks recorded at the famous Muscle Shoals studios could not be brokered but it at least leaves in hope of another issue.

I heard him singing "The Power of a Woman" on Sounds of the 60s a couple of weeks ago, and was blown away by the song, and his wonderful soulful delivery of it. On the strength of that, I tracked him down on You Tube, and thus bought this album.

He appears to be another great unsung "hero" of soul, but is equally at home singing gospel and blues (in fact, I understand that these days he only sings secular music).

This is top notch southern soul, with strong songs and (according to the sleeve notes) many of those Muscle Shoals musicians responsible for literally dozens of superb recordings in the 60s and 70s.

If you like Otis Redding, James Carr, O. V. Wright and Solomon Burke you will not fail to be moved by Spencer Wiggins.

If Spencer Wiggins had that one big fat hit single he would have been up there with the Wicked Pickett and James Carr but alas he never did. I heard this in a friend's car driving along Mulholland Drive one L.A. afternoon in January 2014 and about wept it was so groovy in places.

If you dig 1960s Deep South R&B and miss Otis Redding to this day go buy this and then thank me for giving you such sound advice. If you dig Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, and you should, listen to this collection of perfection and hear where they got the knowhow to know now how to host a pow-wow. Do you dig?

If you like James Carr, Otis Redding, Sam Cooke or any other of the great soul singers you will really like this. A superb collection of Southern soul from Kent Records which on occasion sounds like B.B. King - no bad thing.
Highly recommended.

A COMBINATION OF SOUL AND BLUES 28 Aug 2009
By Stuart Jefferson - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
One disc 58 minutes approximately. The sound is very good indeed-crisp yet warm, which is just how Wiggins' voice should sound. The vast majority of these tracks were recorded in the mid-sixties or there about. The Goldwax label was a small company in Memphis that recorded a lot of soul singers. Perhaps the most famous of the bunch is James Carr, who is often compared to Otis Redding.

Spencer Wiggins was probably a notch or two below Carr, but his recordings are still very fine. While sticking to an honest soul style,he also injected a lot of blues into his singing. This is what separates him from other singers of the era. His voice was a combination of grit with a pleading tone,so important in soul music, mixed in. The combination is very effective and visceral. A favorite in northern soul circles since the early seventies,Wiggins is now involved in gospel music, and has pretty much left his old style behind.

But what he has left listeners with are a number of singles, and a few unissued tracks, that still sound great today. All the tracks are good, honest soul music, and listeners will have their favorites. There are several tracks of out-and-out blues ("Sweet Sixteen","My Love Is Real",and others) which give a good indication of Wiggins' blues talent. This album is one of those instances where each song is powerful, and taken together, makes for a great, exciting listening experience. The backing on these tracks is very powerful and tack-sharp,with a great horn sound,as only Memphis musicians can lay down.

For those looking for an authentic soul sound, mixed with blues, straight out of Memphis, this is it. The folks at Ace Records have done listeners a favor by collecting and releasing these fine tracks. The accompanying booklet tells a bit of Wiggins' history, both in and out of music. There are also color photographs of several of his 45's labels, which shows the depth that Ace records went to,in researching this artist. Music of this caliber should not be forgotten. Wiggins voice and his talent can now be heard and enjoyed by anyone looking for a tough soul/blues singer who could consistently deliver the goods. Do yourself a favor and listen to some great music that nobody records or releases anymore. You just might be surprised at what you hear.

A Lonely Man 8 Mar 2014
By Warren Rachele - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
When the soulful tenor of Spencer Wiggins slips into his falsetto, we’re immediately convicted of the almost criminal ignorance the he and other soul artists have suffered while we are inundated with the sounds of highly processed ‘soul’ singers of the modern age. Putting the studio-producer creations up against the lives wrung out in song of Wiggins and his label mates James Carr, Willie Walker and Barbara Perry demonstrates again and again that you can’t have soul music without soul.

This collection of Wiggin’s tracks collected by the British Kent Soul label represents tracks largely distributed by the southern Goldwax label. The range of material spans the soulful to the silly (He’s Too Old) but on every track Wiggin’s voice draws you in to life through his eyes. Songs of love, whether illicit (Once in a While, Who’s Been Warming My Oven) or longing (I’ve Never Loved a Woman), form the foundation of the soul experience, and when they find a home in our hearts, they are our experience as well.
