Goldwax was the other Memphis based soul label besides the much better known Stax label. As a lover of the Stax sound I decided that it was time to broaden my Southern Soul horizon and bought this record. It is as good as the best on Stax and therefor some of the best Southern Soul you will ever hear. James Carr's "Dark end of the street" is probably the best known Goldwax track. The others are (almost)as good as Carr. My personal favourit is the uptempo "He's too old" by Spencer Wiggins.
While writing this review I am thinking whether or not it will be possible to find 24 tracks as good as this on any other soul label. Could be a problem for most soul labels.
The bonus that comes with this CD is the booklet. The people at Ace/Kent have as always come up with a very well documented booklet. You cannot only listen to the Goldwax Story but you can also read it.

As far as i am aware , this is currently the only CD release of the single which i personally consider the best that's ever been released . And i'm talking about any style and any era of music you care to mention . And in 30 years of being an avid music fan , i believe i've heard the best of them all .
The song i'm talking about sits proudly on this fine compilation at track number 5 : That's How Strong My Love Is by O.V. Wright .
The story of O.V. Wright is a long and interesting one but i don't have the time to get into it now . Suffice to say that the man was a superb singer , deeply rooted in the Gospel tradition which dominates Southern soul . Stax Records had the chance to sign him (and this song) but passed and the world is surely a poorer place for that decision , how much joy and pleasure this mans voice could have given us if he'd become a bigger star than he did .
If you have any feeling at all for soul (or beautiful heartfelt music of any kind) then please buy this disc and learn to appreciate the glory and majesty of O.V. Wright a criminally underrated singer .
Oh and i should also add that this disc also contains magnificent performances by such fantastic singers as The Ovations , Wee Willie Walker , Spencer Wiggins and the absolutely incomparable , legendary James Carr . Buy all his CD's Next !!!!

Not bad..... 24 Jan 2011
Format:Audio CD
About two thirds of the tracks are real belters....these include songs by...THE OVATIONS&LOUIS WILLIAMS - WEE WILLIE WALKER - SPENCER WIGGINS - JAMES CARR[ WHENS HE EVER PUT A FOOT WRONG] -O V WRIGHT - BOTH FEMALE ARTISTS .....but the real stand out tracks for me where three names i had never heard before -EDDIE JEFFERSON -JEB STUART and GEORGE & GREER.....Its not a cheap album so Im giving it only 4 stars for that reason.... but what was good.. really....WAS GOOD.
