It grows on you

When I first got this album in the mail, I had no idea why I ordered it. Why would I want some lame Sam Cooke imitation when I can just listen to the real thing? Months later, I gave the CD a second chance. Thank God I did. Not every song is a complete winner, but when this album gets a piece of the ball, it hits it out of the park. "Don't Cry," "You Had Your Choice," and "Rockin' Chair" are outstanding. "I've Gotta Go" will stick in your head whenever you leave somewhere. Louis Williams' voice is similar to Cooke's, but not the same. And although there are some songs that are clearly trying to work as pure imitation, the best ones are nothing like Cooke's tunes. According to the album's lengthy liner notes, The Ovations came around the same time as O.V. Wright and James Carr, but their sound is clearly lighter, more upbeat, and geared toward pop. Not as essential, but at times, very good.
A great treasure from the vaults !!

Often wondered how the Ovations slipped through the cracks. I remembered
hearing this group for the first in late 1966. At first, I thought the voice was that of the late great Sam Cooke. Their harmonies could rival any of the Motown groups of that era. Listening to "Me and My imagination" and "Wonderful to be in love", just a few of the cuts on the cd, bought back memories of a time where artist would but their heart and soul into their songs. And it was always centered around the word "LOVE". I'm proud and honored to add this classic group to my growing collections of real singers!!

Re-Introduction : slight let down

I am a true music lover, especially partial to vocal groups with unique,tight harmonies. I was harmonically introduced to this group(The Ovations)quite a few years ago. My intro was "Don't Cry",immediately swept me into a state of can't get enough,then as I am today. I have it in a loop as I write my short review. (You had your choice) has a maybe listen as I scan the other tracks. However,
In short, I am disappointed.I thought this album would offer more than(2)songs with the ear appeal of the before mentioned, that I like. 2 out of 26 tracks does not justify a buy at that price,not really a bang in it for the buck. Music Man
