I love this book and its prequel The God Beneath the Sea. Both are beautifully written in a way that is enticing, tragic and addictive... and the illustrations are the real stars of the show. I've read them over and over and can't get enough of Keeping's stunning drawings.

I have a much loved copy of this book and wanted to give it to someone else. Unfortunately the copy i ordered never arrived, nor did the replacement. I think it is out of print now, but if you should ever see a copy in a second hand shop snap it up, you will not be disappointed. it is beautifully written and retells the labours of Hercules. Although it is aimed at older children, I was gripped by it.

Lyrical and magical prose. 27 April 2011

Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
This book has the prose that Garfield always delivers, though I'm uncertain about Blishen's contribution and certainly don't want to slight the co-author. But, Garfield in "God Beneath The Sea" captivated me with its retelling of the Greek legend of Hephaestus, while weaving in many other characters from classical myth. Particularly entrancing was Hermes, a god in "Sea" and also in "Shadow," truly one of the most 'human' of the Greek pantheon. The protagonist in "Shadow" is a standin for Homer, or maybe it /is/ Homer, I don't know, but his all-too-human yearning to see an actual god is understandable and at the end of the book, attained. This really deserves its five-star rating for the glory of its prose.

"The God Beneath the Sea" and "The Golden Shadow" are magical books. Their language is like music. The author creates images that will stay with you. These book should not go out of print.
