The best regency I've read in a while, with some truly touching moments. I'd never heard of Miranda Jarrett before I read this but I will definitely seach out some of her other work. Very highly recommended.

Honesty, so necessary in true love, is the one thing Jenny Dell and Brant Claremont, sixth Duek of Strachen, Marquess of Elwes, have both grown up avoiding. Jenny's family of Irish actors are on the run when she's knocked unconscious and found by Brant on his estate. She can't reveal her true identity, or her most recent alias, and takes refuge in faking amnesia.

Brant's secret shame is that despite his intense efforts, he can't learn to read. He's succeeded in restoring the estate his father left in huge debt but avoids real closeness to society. To him, Jenny is obviously a lady of quality. He desparately wants her, but believes he's unworthy.

Sexual tension runs high. There are attempts on Jenny's life, secrets to be kept, mysteries to be solved and a traditional ending in which sharing truth wins true love. SENSUAL

This book had everything I love in a good historical romance: a hunky tortured hero with a dark secret, a bad girl heroine whose better than she thinks, lots of angst and sexual tension, and good settings without any historical boo-boos. I haven't read anything else by this writer before, (I only bought this one becauce I thought it sounded interesting), but I'm going to look for the rest of her books now. Highly reccommended!

'No matter how much any one of us pretends to be someone else, in the end we always are what we are.' 'Ahh.' For whatever reason, Brant relaxed. 'Then you are a fatalist? You believe that we can never change from what we're born? That our destiny remains always the same, with no hope of growth or improvement? 'No, no, no! It's not so complicated as that, Your Grace. I only meant that no matter how many changes you may make for the world to see, you are still at heart, or in your soul. the same creature you were born. That's what I know,' Jenny said with conviction. She did believe it. How could she not, when so much of her life was unabashed deception? If she didn't believe in herself independent of whatever new identity she'd concocted, why, then, she'd have nothing at all.
