Product Description

Product Description

One of the central texts of the Middle Ages, The Golden Legend deeply influenced the imagery of poetry, painting and stained glass with its fascinating descriptions of saints' lives and religious festivals. By creating a single-volume sourcebook of core Christian stories, Jacobus de Voragine (c. 1229-98) attracted a huge audience across Europe. This selection of over seventy biographies ranges from the first Apostles and Roman martyrs to near-contemporaries such as St Dominic, St Francis of Assissi and St Elizabeth of Hungary. Here, witnesses to the true faith endure horrific tortures; reformed prostitutes win divine forgiveness; while other women live disguised as monks or nobly resist lustful tyrants. Lucid and compelling, The Golden Legend offers an enthralling insight into the medieval mind.

About the Author

Jacobus de Voragine (c.1229-98) was the medieval Archbishop of Genoa. He entered the Dominican Order in 1244 and became prior of the Order in Lombardy in 1267. In 1292 he became Archbishop and in this capacity was actively engaged in peacemaking between the local feuding families.

Though a nice-looking & well edited book (as Penguins often are) it is a shame that all the hagiological fables could not be included, considering their narrative & historical value. These are the Western answer to The Arabian Nights, marvel tales: & make writers such as Sir Thomas Malory far more easy to understand in context (this was one of the few non-Arthurian books he seems to have read).

The Golden Legend is a compilation of lives of saints which was of great use to painters and all artists involved in the visual representation of saints in sculpture, painting, stained glass, etc.

The volume is a selection of some saints' lives sorted along the christian calendar with the date associated with each saint's name, following the arrangements of the stories in the original publication. There is an introduction presenting The Golden Legend in context, and also a few explanations about the translation.

Every student of religious imagery from the 13th century onwards should keep The Golden Legend close at hand for easy reference.

The selection included in this book is simply wonderful and each story has an epic dimension with themes that range from the grotesque to the divine. Our Saints are the Christian equivalent of the classic Olympus with all its heroes and heroines. Yesterday, being the Feast of all Saints it is the right time to buy and read this fantastic book which entertains and educates at the same time.
