'As long as meticulous craftsmanship and honest entertainment are valued, and as long as action, authenticity, and expertise still make up the strong framework of the good adventure/thriller, Desmond Bagley's books will surely be read.' REGINALD HILL, Twentieth Century Crime and Mystery Writers

'Bagley is a master storyteller.' DAILY MIRROR

'Mr Bagley has no equal at this sort of thing.' SUNDAY MIRROR

'One of the best adventure stories I have read for years.' DAILY MIRROR

THE GOLDEN KEEL

When the Allies invaded southern Italy in 1943, Mussolini's personal treasure was moved north to safety under heavily armed guard. It was never seen again. Now, an expedition plans to unearth the treasure and smuggle it out of Italy. But their reckless mission is being followed - by enemies who are as powerful and ruthless as they are deadly…

THE VIVERO LETTER

Jeremy Wheale's well-ordered life is blasted apart when his brother is murdered. The killer was after a family heirloom - an antique gold tray - which sets Wheale on a trail from Devon to the tropical rainforest of Yucatan. There he joins the hunt for a lost Mayan city. But in the dense cover of the jungle a band of vicious convict mercenaries are waiting to strike…

Includes a unique bonus - Desmond Bagley's rare introduction to these books.

Bagley's lucky book 19 Jun 2009
Format:Paperback
Desmond Bagley was known to family and friends as Simon. His first novel "The Golden Keel" was, he assured me, the result of running into an old soldier in a Jo'burg bar. The old soldier's name was Walker, and he explained to Bagley how his war had been fighting for the Allies in Italy, and how he had heard about Mussolini's 'missing' gold (the entire Italian gold reserve was hidden at the orders of Mussolini early in the war). Needless to say the gold had not been found by the early 1960's (nor subsequently) when Bagley first heard Walker's tale. So it was that he took this solitary piece of information and fashioned it into a very plausible thriller - his first. He always called it his lucky book, because it kept him in his favourite tipple over the years (a particularly fine single-malt whisky). He was a friend of mine for the years I lived on the island of Guernsey, but more than that he was a thriller writer of the first rank.
"The Golden Keel" is an exceptionally well researched book, especially regarding the nautical flavour Bagley evokes (he was an out-and-out landlubber, by the way). But then this author was a very well read man (he had his own extensive library) the key perhaps to success with the written word!
As a footnote I recall one of my early meetings with Simon at his house on the edge of St Peter Port. We were sitting in his upstairs study overlooking the front courtyard, where he had, over a cup of coffee, recounted the story of his meeting with Walker. He then added a little wryly: 'Every time I hear someone knocking on the front door [the house never had a door bell] I think it's Walker come for his share of the royalties!' Whether true or not it was a lovely little vignette.

Its a long time since I last read these two books. How I have aged but these stories havent. Such a shame that books of this quality are so difficult to get hold of. I suppose that popularity is fical and if we were to revere all things old there would be no opportunities for new authors. Clearly I have enjoyed revisiting Desmond Bagley and can recommend these tales without exception.

the golden keel 28 Aug 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I enjoyed the golden keel. Its the first book ive read by this author. I found it interesting with a few twists, and the story kept me interested all the way through. Pretty much easy to follow and enjoyable. I could quite easily see this made into a film that you'd watch on a lazy sunday afternoon!!
