Book Description

12 April 2012 1451645430 978-1451645439
Doctors told Margret Dagmar that her son Keli, who lives with a severe form of non-verbal autism, would never be able to communicate; she was told that he would be best off locked in an institution for the rest of his life. Driven by a love for her child, Margret embarked on a mission to find a way to connect with him. Oscar Award-winning actress Kate Winslet paired up with Margret and Keli to produce a documentary film about their journey. The team found an organization called Helping Autism Learning Outreach (HALO), where specialists taught Keli other ways to communicate. He now composes beautiful and deeply moving poetry; one poem Keli wrote is called "The Golden Hat," which describes a magical hat that enables an autistic boy to communicate. Inspired by Keli's poem, Winslet developed a way to raise awareness and funds to support autism outreach. Her project asks friends to pass a hat-chosen from Kate's closet-from one to another, after they've each taken a self-portrait wearing it. The list of those photographs includes Angelina Jolie, Steven Spielberg, Oprah, Sting, Daniel Craig, and many more.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Tip My Hat to the Golden Hat Foundation 31 Mar 2012
Format:Hardcover
I love Kate Winslet, Leo DiCaprio, Johnny Depp, Natalie Portman and all the other high profile people who have passed the Golden Hat around to the world at large. Thank you all so much for what you've done!

Every so often I come across a book that moves me so deeply and is so personally valuable like a king's treasure and this book is one of them. People with autism have so much to contribute and, as do all people have the innate desire and need to communicate.

Keli, the youngest of 3 Thorsteinsson boys has autism. For years he was nonverbal and the so-called experts told Margaret Ericsdottir and her husband Thorstein not to expect much from their son as he was believed to be on a mental plane with a 2-year-old. When you dig deeper into that erroneous finding, never underestimate even a child that age. The toddler brain is absorbing language and a lot of brain development is taking place then. Sadly, nobody knew just how bright Keli was until he was closing in on his teens. Over time, it was discovered that Keli had a wide range of musical appreciation and was even a Beatles' fan!

The Golden Hat foundation, named by Keli is created to help people with autism and their families find communication tools. Good on Kate Winslet and all the others who banded forces to make the Golden Hat Foundation a reality. These kind people who have stepped up to the plate have paid it forward. Kate Winslet, in her series of e-mails to the author has shown a deep empathy for what family members of a loved one with autism confront and at all times she showed respect for Keli. Keli had the pleasure of meeting Kate Winslet in London during a film shooting.

People familiar with autism literature and films encounter old "friends" such as Tito and Soma The Mind Tree: A Miraculous Child Breaks the Silence of Autism, (Soma worked with Keli as well as Dov, Portia Iversen's oldest child from Strange Son, Carly, the bright young woman who was nonverbal from "Medical Mystery Story" and Carly's Voice: Breaking Through Autism and Neal Katz, who was just delightful in Autism: The Musical.

I loved reading updates on people I had read about in other books and learning about more people who have been helped with communication techniques. Bless you, Kate and thank you! I can never thank you and the others enough. You have been Ambassadors to Autism and have paved a Boulevard of Tolerance. Again, I say thank you!

As an added bonus, readers are treated to Icelandic culture and some of Keli's writings include nods to his Icelandic heritage. His poem about the mountain is very a propos and very deep.

This book has a common bond with SOULS: BENEATH & BEYOND AUTISM (paperback version) in that extraordinary photographs of people with autism with a short passage by them are included. I found Keli's poetry especially intense; again, it is crucial to remember that because a person is nonverbal, that does not mean the person isn't understanding what is going on. Dov, the young man featured in "Strange Son" said he'd been spending his time listening. That was the way he learned. Tito and Soma, who came to America from India and worked with Dov have since relocated to Austin, Texas. Rowan Isaacson, the boy featured in The Horse Boy: A Father's Quest to Heal His Son (Thorndike Press Large Print Basic Series) was helped via unconventional methods and he, like Tito is in Austin Texas.

In fact, on an interesting note, Soma and Tito have founded HALO, (Helping Autism through Learning & Outreach) in Austin, Texas which is rapidly becoming an educational center for people with autism. Soma's book Understanding Autism through Rapid Prompting Method is the key that unlocked the limbo of silence in which many people with autism are trapped.

Please, please buy this book and make a gift out of it. It is a gift to you as well. You can pay it forward by passing the Golden Hat around to others so that they, too can share in this very special gift, the gift of being a good person. It is past time to LISTEN to autism. It is long past time people with autism were given a turn at bat and I am glad to see that is happening.

Margaret Ericsdottir, Kate Winslet, Leo DiCaprio et al., again, I thank you all from the bottom of my heart. You have really reinforced what it means to be a good person.

I chose this rating because the book was really good and interesting to know about autism. I liked every bit of the book especially the pictures and seeing what other people would say as their first words, and i would recommend this book to all ages and parents who have kids with autism.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Hats off" to Kate and Margret's Crusade in Keli's name! 29 Mar 2012
By Beating the Odds at Autism - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
"Hats off" to Kate Winslet and her beautifully-designed book, along with Margret and Keli - of course! - who allowed us to step inside their lives for a moment. And kudos to all of the "hollywood stars" as well as the "stars of autism" who so graciously contributed in order to "speak to readers" about this very important crusade! While reading last night on my Kindle, I couldn't help but be moved by the email exchanges between Margret and Kate...as I, too, am the mother of a child with autism. When Margret shared that Keli wasn't diagnosed until four years of age...I felt her angst, as my son was diagnosed at three-and-a-half, which was very, very late, considering he's now 20. I can relate to Margret's comment that Keli is "like a sponge" and absorbing everything around him. When my son was younger, we referred to autism as the "A word" because I just knew in my heart that, although he wasn't able to express himself, he was "taking in" everything that everyone was saying about him...and I never wanted people to talk "about him" as if he wasn't there; but rather, to him...even though we never got a response from him.

Listening to Margret talk about how autism makes you look at life in a different light...no truer words could be spoken. When you see the "veil of autism" begin to be lifted slightly...there are no words to describe your emotions...and I could "feel" Margret's emotions in her email exchanges, and Kate was so receptive and communicatively on point, that I was able to hear her voice and her passion and excitement as I was reading.

In closing, although my son was able to "find his voice" and, despite the pediatric neurologist telling us that he would never "develop any useful language" he is now in his second year at our Community College. I've posted The Golden Hat link on our Facebook Book Page and I hope to keep the momentum going for this passionate dream of Margret, Kate and - I'm sure I speak for - all parents of nonverbal children.

Sincerely, Linda Burns, Author of "Beating the Odds at Autism" One Family's Winning Hand.

5.0 out of 5 stars Titanic!! 15 April 2012
By W. Lawton - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Kate Winslet and Margret Ericsdottir have written a compelling book called The Golden Hat, and together have embarked on a Titanic project called The Golden Hat Foundation. They are trying to bring awareness and solutions to a monumental problem, Autism. According to the book, there are approximately 67 million people worldwide with Autism, most of whom are non verbal. The amount of human potential bottled up in these millions of people is staggering. It needs to be released.

If you've ever wondered how some people have such incredible passion for a purpose, read the book and the email exchange between Kate and Margret. It will have you jumping out of the chair and eager to support their cause. Besides the email exchange, which by the way also reveals what's in Keli's (Margret's autistic son) magnificent mind, there are firsthand accounts from newly verbal autistic people, and candid photos and quotes from many Hollywood folks wearing Keli's golden hat. A class act!! If you care about giving these gifted people a chance at life, buy the book and support the foundation. This noble and worthy cause needs the highest possible attention.

In the book Kate says "People with Autism have the potential to achieve great things, but only when given the appropriate support and education". I have seen this first hand and in fact, a few weeks ago went to an event where a 20 year old autistic young man gave his account of growing up with autism. When he was 3, his parents were told he would never speak. After successful behavioral therapy, love, support and education (including making the football team in high school, now living a socially active life and just recently making the dean's list in college), he is living testimony that the support and education that Kate and Margret are striving for works. His story is documented (by his mom, his sister and himself) in the recently released book "Beating the Odds at Autism: One Family's Winning Hand". Both books highly recommended!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredibly moving story for all parents!! 27 Mar 2012
By jessica - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I picked a copy today and it was so much more amazing than I thought it would be. First, the story of how Kate Winslet befriended this family and then wanted to do more is inspiring. I was so impressed that she isn't affected by autism in her own family but couldn't just sit back and do nothing. Then secondly, the pictures of the celebrities were so beautiful. They all look like professional layouts but they are all self portraits taken on ordinary cameras... usually smart phones( you can see them in the pictures). The words are so moving and funny!! I too can't imagine if I couldn't communicate with my own child and it just brings a tear to my eye to think of never hearing her voice!! Thank you Kate Winslet for speaking up for them!! This is an amazing book and I plan to buy more now that I have seen it first hand for my daughter's teachers for Teacher Appreciation Week coming up soon and for family members for Easter!! It is truly an amazing book!!
