Mapp did a masterful telling of the king that he and many other historians consider England's greatest, Alfred the Great. He gives plenty of background on not just England's state of affairs in the 9th Century A.D. but also the world surrounding it. The Vikings are given their proper due, which they must, because Alfred had to deal with them continually.
Mapp paints a portrait of a king who loved his God, nation, truth, and learning greatly. An appendix defines Alfred's Law, which gives further insight into him.
Throughout, Mapp maintains some humor, especially when his first sentence reads: "The English are more polite than many nations in the informal titles which they bestow on their rulers." He goes on list a few other kings' informal titles to contrast them with the one he considers the greatest: the Stammerer, the Spider, the Gross, the do-Nothing, the Bad, the Mad, the Bald, and the Simple.
This is an excellent work to better understand the life and times of Alfred the Great.
