Having read Lion's Game I immediately bought every book written by the same author, & this was the first one I read. It is an unusual story of a US lawyer married into money who finds a Mafia boss has moved in as a new neighbour. The way that this interferes with & ultimately destroys all their lives is wholly unpredictable and holds ones attention.

The Gold coast was given to me as a gift, not having read any of Nelson Demille's I started to read the book with an open mind and no knowledge of the authors style. I was soon hooked, it soon became apparent this was one of those books you did not want to put down. The story is of how a previous law abbiding citizen, married into 'old money, becomes involved with the 'new money ' of a big Mafia boss. It tells of his struggle with his conscience, his spiral downwards and the inevitable tragic consequences. The story is well written, but tends to loose its momentum two thirds of the way through, as if the story has been taken up by another writer, and by the last page it is a relief that all the loose ends have been tied up and you can move onto another book.

Intriguing and brilliantly written book. It is the bits that De Mille does not describe that make you think the most, he uses the reader's imagination wonderfully. Probably one the Worlds best contemporary writer's. A master of sarcasm. The sequel to this book 'The Gate House' is also well worth reading.

Typical DeMille
A strange book and it takes a long time to get going and not a lot happens until half way - shades of Plum Island - but it still reads well.

Stick to Demille's "John Corey" novels!
I've read a few Nelson Demille novels prior to this one. I really enjoyed the John Corey books, especially Night Fall, a must read for conspiracy theorists! Read more

Gold stars for Gold Coast
