About the Author

Erich von Daniken is probably the world's foremost Ufologist. In over twenty publications he has provided evidence for his theory that extraterrestrial beings visited the earth. In The Gods Were Astronauts! he again asks the question that has intrigued humankind for millennia, researching and analysing the major world religions, probing their myths and accepted truths.

I have read von danikens first book CHARIOTS OF THE GODS , and only recently decided to get the audiobook version as i wanted to see how much of the content would hold up after such a long time , i had forgotten how amazing von danikens theories were and how they had intriqued me and so after listening i wanted more ,i bought the audio version of this edition THE GODS WERE ASTRONAUTS .Firstly the MP3cd audiobook runs for just over 7 hours and 32 minutes in total and is unabridged , the narrator did a fair job and i did not find his voice too monotone , there is a short just under 10 minute segment at the end of the audiobook with an interview with von daniken himself via telephone which was a good little extra .The actual substance of the book is set into sections , and as previously stated by another reviewer sees von daniken firstly going over sections of the old testament from the bible , and then his theories of how he interprets them and how the actual writings have been mis - translated , and in the section concerning the catholic church and various virgin mary sightings also withheld and even contrived.some of this material is in his previous books but there is still much to listen too that is new and intrigueing ,i found the detail and section on the indian religious stories fascinating and very informative along with his farely detailed account of how the catholic faith was originally instigated .Read more ›

This is the first book I read by this author. By all accounts I should of read 'Chariots of the Gods' before (there is alot of 'in my previous book....').
However, the book is extremely well researched through many languages and provokes thoughts of 'what if this was true?'
The book starts off with Christianity, which although the author claims to be religious, he spends a whole chapter ripping the belief system apart. Some interesting stories are told, only little to back up the theory that Gods were astronauts.
Then he moves onto stories from Indian folklore and this is where it gets interesting. Numerous stories are recounted, translated and analysed - this is where the reader starts thinking.
I was unsure what to make of this book, and to tell the truth, still am not. The author did not go into great deal about who these aliens were, just throws lots and lots of ancient stories at the reader, with no difinitve statements. In fact the more I think about it, the more confused I become....

The Gods Were Astronauts: Evidence of the True Identities of the Old 'Gods'

Von Daniken's first book was a novel idea. The fact that everyone looks to the sky when talking about God or angels made the whole concept of God being a visitor from space almost possible. An angel's halo or a spaceman's helmet? It did at least make you wonder.
This book is just pure, rediculous fantasy. The idea that extra terestrials with enormous fighting space vehicles were waging war amongst ancient tribes, carrying the chosen few to the Moon and Mars for the odd outing and slaughtering thousands of people just for the hell of it and all of this recorded by some ancient Indian scribe is stretching imagination just a little too far.

It was a struggle to read this nonsense to the end which is a great pity because Von Daniken is capable of more intersting reading.

A very interesting read. I was not disappointed by this book.
It is quite typical of Daniken' s other books.
If you believe like me that he is definitely onto something when he suggests that we have reached a high technology before, then you will enjoy reading this book, which takes a new look at archaeological finds around the world, alongside extracts from the Bible and the Indian religious writings.
His conclusions are founded by a process of logical deduction and from both primary and secondary sources. Some ill be familiar, and some may surprise you.

A lot of information I am still trying to get resolved , if only the talked about manuscripts could be easily got and places mentioned be accessible to the layman , there would then be a bigger cry for transparency which would make the keepers of the universal secrets open up to the masses.

.....quite complicated and a lot of reference to the Bible; however, the content is interesting and does make you think about evolution. I firmly believe we are inter-bred with star beings.
