The late Howard Sasportas packed a huge amount of high quality astrological and psychological information into this intelligent, clear and accessible book. It has been one of my constant companions over the last 10 years or so, both in my work as a professional astrologer and in following my own transits of Uranus, Neptune and Pluto.
The first section, "The Collaboration with the Inevitable", is an excellent summary of how astrology can be used as a tool for understanding ongoing personal transformation, helping to turn perceived crises into opportunities. Sasportas then moves on to look in great detail and depth at the transits of Uranus, Neptune and Pluto to each planet in the natal chart. A very large number of case histories are dotted throughout the transit interpretations, with a wide range of examples of how each planetary combination can show up in daily life. These possible events are considered in the context of the psychological development of the individual, Sasportas drawing on his extensive knowledge of many fields of psychology, mythology and spirituality.
Much of the astrological material here is similar to other classic transit books such as those by Robert Hand, Betty Lundsted or Stephen Arroyo (who Sasportas acknowledges), but Sasportas has masterfully integrated a huge number of additional psychological and spiritual insights from many sources. The Gods Of Change is a wise and compassionate conribution to modern astrology.

5.0 out of 5 stars Why has this book been deleted? 20 July 2006
Format:Paperback
I was horrified to learn that this book has been deleted! It must be one the best books ever written on astrology and goes way beyond anything written by other astrologers who will remain nameless. I fortunately still have a battered copy but Penguin Books are depriving people of a lot of superb information by taking this title out of print. You only have to look at the price that second hand copies are fetching to see how good it is. Come on Penguin, get your act together and put this book back on the bookshop shelves where it should be! Howard Sasportas (sadly now deceased) is one of the best astrology writers EVER! Anybody who is fortunate to have a copy of this book, treat it like the gold-dust that it is.

If you want to know about the slow transits, the ones that reflect big changes in our lives in a big way, then this is the book to get. It is accessible and illuminating.
Incidentally, if you want a book that shows how and why transits happen and how and why they are linked to God, then you must try The Astrology of God: Introducing God to the Modern World- this really is an astonishing book.
Another great book on transits is, of course, Planets in Transit: Life Cycles for Living
Why not really expand your knowledge and get all three?

5.0 out of 5 stars outstanding 17 Aug 2000
By Carol Bellis - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I have read almost every book published on outer planet transits, and this is by far the most thorough book there is on possible outcomes manifested in our lives when we experience the energy of these planets affecting our personal planets. Not only does he cover aspects, he discusses the planets transiting through the 12 houses and major and minor areas of emphasis in our daily lives. I am just beginning to do professional readings and this is the one book I would not want to be without when interpreting outer planet transits. BUY IT NOW!

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended, nurtures the soul during difficult times 26 Jun 1997
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This is an extraordinary book, specially for those who are facing difficult times, such as losses in a general way and dramatic lifestyle changes. Sasportas shows us how full of wise and sense astrology can be when you're dealing with these slow transpersonal planets, which always bring our lives deep transformations. Each planet symbology and signification is explained, as well as what specific transits mean. But above all the "not boringly technical information", you get something like a model for understanding the roots of painfull moments we all go through. The greatest reason I have for praising and advicing this book is the conception behind it: we suffer because we can't see the entire picture in the present; as time goes by we get to know the meaning of what we lived - and that is (bottom line) the evolution of the undying soul.
It doesn't require - as i said - almost any astrologic background, except for knowing these planets aspects in your life in a given period; and it certainly brings us peace of mind through a greater reality insight.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of our brilliant humanstic astrologers 26 Feb 2002
By L. Sutherland-Fraser - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I think we were robbed when Howard passed some years ago, he was a brilliant, self aware and humble astrologer who had a message and got it out to those who loved his work. He is sadly missed. This is the best book on transits out there in my opinion as it takes in the whole not just the day to day things that many transit books take into account. The inner workings of transits from the outer planets. I love this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant 21 Jan 2004
By Goofer Offer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
The BEST book on the transits of the outer planets - by far. Indispensable for any astrologer - beginner to expert.

Particularly useful if used in conjunction with a graphic ephemeris as done by WinStar - the astrology program. You can do a 50 year graph of the outer planet movements seeing all activations of 45 degree aspects at a glance. See what happened in the past to predict pretty accurately what will happen in the future - after all time is just a construct!
