Product Description

Book Description:

The Gododdin Poems was first published in 1869 under the authorship of William F. Skene. The Gododdin (pronounced [go'doðin]) were a Brythonic people of north-eastern Britain (modern north-east England and south-east Scotland) in the sub-Roman period, best known as the subject of the 7th century Welsh series of poems known as Y Gododdin, attributed to Aneirin.

The name Gododdin is the Modern Welsh form; it is derived, via earlier Welsh Guotodin from the Brythonic language word Votadini, attested in Latin texts.

About the Author

About the Author:

"William Forbes Skene (7 June 1809– 29 August 1892), Scottish historian and antiquary, was the second son of Sir Walter Scott's friend, James Skene (1775–1864), of Rubislaw, near Aberdeen, and was born on June 7 1809.

He was educated at Edinburgh Academy in Edinburgh and at the University of St Andrews, taking an especial interest in the study of Celtic philology and literature. In 1832, he became a writer to the signet (WS), and shortly afterwards obtained an official appointment in the bill department of the Court of Session, which he held until 1865. His early interest in the history and antiquities of the Scottish Highlands bore its first fruit in 1837, when he published The Highlanders of Scotland, their Origin, History and Antiquities.

In 1847, during the Highland Potato Famine, he was appointed Secretary to the Central Board for Highland Relief. In this position he worked closely with Sir Charles Trevelyan, Assistant Secretary to the Treasury.

His chief work, however, is his Celtic Scotland, a History of Ancient Alban (5 vols., Edinburgh, 1876-1880), perhaps the most important contribution to Scottish history written during the 19th century. In 1879 he was made a Doctor of Civil Law (DCL) of the University of Oxford, and in 1881 Historiographer Royal for Scotland. He died in Edinburgh on August 29 1892.

The most important of Skene's other works are: editions of John of Fordun's Chronica genus Scotorum (Edinburgh, 1871–1872); of the Four Ancient Books of Wales (Edinburgh, 1868); of the Chronicles of the Picts and Scots (Edinburgh, 1867); and of Adomnán's Vita S. Columbae (Edinburgh, 1874); an Essay on the Coronation Stone of Scone (Edinburgh, 1869); and Memorials of the Family of Skene of Skene (Aberdeen, 1887)." (Quote from wikipedia.org)

The Gododdin, that undateable Welsh epic from which furious controversies have been spawned, is a brilliant poem in its original form, and Skene was an early admirer. His translation captures some of the beauty of the Welsh text, but is too inaccurate to really be used to for close study; for that you'll want the Jarman or Koch versions. Depending on what you want it for, this book can be a good way to make the poem's acquaintance.

The Gododdin Poems
In some way these poems could be termed "all our yesterdays" and comprise as a series of elegies to the people of the north east of England who died in a battle that has been dated as occurring around the year 600 at Catterick north Yorkshire.
The Gododdin where Celtic people from Hen Ogled or north England, the word Gododdin is a Welsh form of Guotodin and the poem is attributed to the prince of bards Aneirin, now known as Aneurin. He was present at the battle and survived to be captured and eventually ransomed.
The Gododdin Poems are a series of poems in remembrance of heroes who died in battle fighting the Angles of Deira a kingdom that extended from the river Humber to the Tees.
All except one of these heroes was killed and it seemed that they all had drank a huge quantity of mead before going into battle similar to the Viking berserkers who consumed Fly Agaric (Amanita Muscaria} in belief that they took on the spirit of the shamanistic totem which was a bear that gave the warriors strength. Fighting while drunk was a form of Dutch courage that added aggression in battle.
One of the poems is the first time ever that mentions the word Arthur and appears in here in Bardic poetry in relation to the good qualities of one of the dead heroes in this battle. It is thought that this spoken word Bardic poetry was first written down in old Welsh in the 9th century.
The moral of these events narrated in the poems is do not go into battle when drunk or you may become a dead hero.
