Album Description
* This compilation collects many of James Brown's pre funk productions onto one CD for the very first time. These highlight the godfather of soul's intuitive feel for putting together great records with the members of his revue. It also gives us an insight into a period when, because of contractural disputes, Brown was not making his own recordings. Instead, he was influencing others, changing the sound of records and creating a change of unprecedented importance on how we listen to music.
* Many of the records are now sought-after club classics: Dizzy Jones' `I Don't Care', Elsie Mae's `Do You Really Want To Rescue Me' and Bobby Byrd's `I'm Lonely' are long-time club favourites but more importantly are cracking records. The compilation contains 11 tracks that are being made available for the first time since they were issued on 45.
* Rare early versions of later James Brown classics such as `If You Don't Work' and `I Got You' (later `I Feel Good') are all present and correct, alongside some amazing and much overlooked recordings such as the beautiful Anna King ballad `That's When I Cry' (from her rare LP on Smash), Vicki Anderson's sensational `Wide Awake In A Dream' and the Rev Willingham's gospel stormer `That's The Spirit'
* Remastered from original tapes, the full booklet has extensive sleeve notes and sessionography.

I've never been much of an R&B / soul fan, we all have our preffered genres but this was recommended on a Mod site and much more eloquently than youre gonna get from me here but suffice to say good music is good music and this comprehensive collection of JB's involvement is a stunner. Varying styles, tempos & artists, soaring vocals and great arrangements. In my limited and recent experience; when compared to earlier JB you can hear the funky flavour coming through and whilst the music is funky it aint FUNK just in case youre thinking about his latter and better known own material but what it is is a little gem and worth every penny. A good recommendation for Christmas / Birthday presents for cherished friends you want to impress, I can see this album being a big success.

I can't believe i'm the only one that's reviewing this great cd! come on!! more cd's of jb's productions would be a great addition. as a record collector of classic R&B music for over 25 years 98 percent of thses tracks are very rare and go for a lot of money so this cd is great deal!! and of courase many of thses tracks are on cd for firt time. so if your a life long classic soul fan like me buy it!!.

Unless you are a true collector and either won't spend the money, or can't spend the money for the individual 45's you're looking for this probably isn't something you need.
The sound quality isn't terrific and at times is muddy but so were the original recordings.
However, if you absolutely have to have James Crawford's "You Don't Work, You Don't Eat" and refuse to spend $50.00+ for the single......this is it.
