SYNOPSIS:
Inspired by true events, The God Complex takes readers on a thrill ride through Chinese medicine. Discover the secrets of the Orient as you embark on a Da Vinci-style adventure. Follow along as a dynamic conspiracy ensues, pitting Eastern medicine against its critics in the West. Each clue brings you one step closer to solving the mystery and uncovering an ancient secret that connects Chinese medicine to martial arts.

EXCERPT:
Gripping his newspaper firmly, Paul's eyes were unable to focus on the words in front of him. He repeatedly turned to his carry-on bag, rummaging through it as if he was looking for something, but he didn't know what he was looking for. The news of his brother's death was overwhelming. Unable to focus, he decided to stand up and walk around. Realizing his section would be called any minute, he sat back down.

"Sections four through six may begin boarding at this time."

The sound system electrified Paul. He shot out of his seat like a spring and queued up in line. His trip to Prague was far from the vacation he imagined-visiting his brother, an English teacher, in a land known for its beer, super models, and extravagant architecture. The news of his brother's mysterious death left him numb with shock.

Upon arrival, police asked for his help in deciphering cryptic journals found at his brother's apartment. The journals contained odd looking diagrams, elements, Chinese characters and ancient proverbs, as well as diary entries. With the help of a liaison from the school and a local Chinese doctor, Paul pieces together the journals' hidden meanings. Clues to a diabolical plot begin to surface at the same time someone is out there executing the plan. Will Paul figure it out in time? Will he ever find who killed his brother?

SETTING:
Set in Prague, The God Complex also serves as a surrogate tour guide, offering readers a unique perspective of the city and its culture. Learn a few Czech words, dishes, and customs.  Download a free self-guided tour from the book's website and turn your trip to Prague into an adventure. Sip coffee in the same cafe where Paul Benson pieces together his brother's mysterious murder. Or, dine with locals on succulent pig's knee in the shadow of the Prague Castle. Tour includes map with thumbnail images, transportation and chapter references, and useful vocabulary.

WARNING:
This book contains violence and sexual content.  The topic has nothing to do with religion. A "God complex" is a psychological term that refers to people who believe they are infallible. It's often used in reference to doctors.

I enjoyed reading this book on many levels, not only was it an excellent crime thriller, it also fed my passion for knowledge by teaching me more about the Eastern approach to medicine.
The plot was pacy and very well researched. The descriptions of the city of Prague had me reaching for the travel brochures, not least to sample the food after reading Chris's delectable descriptions.
There was indeed some violence as I had been warned, but it was a necessary part of the story and not arbitory or off putting in any way.
All the characters were multi dimensional and believable, they were so real I cared more and more for them as the story progressed.
I would certainly recommend this superb book and I shall be looking out for this author's next offering.

4.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing take on Western medicine 14 Jan 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Evidently inspired by true events, we follow the story of a man whose health steadily deteriorates as a result of poor diagnoses by medical professionals who are too busy to pay attention, too brainwashed to recognize other methods of treatment, and/or too invested in their own delusions of omnipotence to notice they've failed. Filled with lots of information about ancient Eastern practices of healing, I found this a highly entertaining/enlightening/thought-provoking read. Although the main character resorts to some pretty drastic means to prove his point, it has a certain appeal to our darker desires to exact revenge and teach a lesson to those who harm us.

I liked the mystery aspect and wished it had played a bigger part. The presentation of the mistakes of Western medicine versus the holistic approach of Eastern medicine became a little long-winded/repetitive at times, but overall a good read. A few minor typos were noted, but not enough to ruin the story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Riveting! 23 Sep 2011
By Laura S. Kara - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
As an acupuncturist, I found The God Complex to be impeccably researched and giving suspense to a story that would otherwise be difficult for the mainstream reader. As a patient having fallen through the cracks of Western medicine and nearly losing my life, I'm grateful to Chris Titus for having written a book that brings a new view on why taking charge of one's health is so important. I can't wait to recommend this book to my patients. This was a great read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Relevant, a MUST read. 8 Oct 2011
By Frank Caruso - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I hope this is the first of many books to come from Chris Titus. He obviously has the unique ability to take a difficult to understand topic and present it as a back drop and plot line to an exciting, twisting adventure novel. This story is a page turner. As a health care provider I witness daily the harsh effects of western medicine on patient moral and their health. This story is poignant to our time as we in the west seek a patient centered health care system, not one controlled by the hospitals, the pharmaceutical and the insurance industries. Herein a western doctor is forced to use his own medicine to cure himself, the results are exciting, relevant and thought provoking. This book is for patients and practitioners alike. Read it!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not a bad read, but a bit long winded at points 3 Jan 2012
By larrycore - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
I enjoyed the mix of east and west medicine, but some of the explanations and diagrams just went on for too long.

The story itself had some nice twists to it, but I felt like some of the plot was left out to make room for the concentration on the eastern medicine portions of the story.

For a first novel I think it was well done. I am hopeful that there are more to come and that, like most authors, he will improve with each book.
