Paul is a boy who is highly religious, goes to a Christian school, lives in a very small town, and loves God and his girlfriend of several years. Living in such a small town and going to a small school, everyone knows the new kids.

The knew person, Manuel, is weird. Everyone talks about him, especially when he joins Paul and his friends at their lunch table. Manuel proceeds to tell them that he is both gay and Christian, two things that don't mix well.

The girls love Manuel, but the boys want to stay far away from him -- except for Paul. Manuel is trying to be Pauls friend and all the guys start talking about the both of them.

As Paul and Manuel hang out, a friendship is formed and Paul challenges Manuel about God, the Bible, and being gay. Every answer Manuel gives makes Paul think differently about his religion and what it says. Is being gay okay, and can you still go to Heaven?

While examining his feelings, Paul wonders about his own sexuality and if his friendship for Manuel is just that -- a friendship. When a series of events happens, Paul finds his true feelings, his true identity, and, most importantly, love.

Alex Sanchez's latest novel is amazing. It gives a new interpretation of "the Bible says that being gay is a sin," an excuse that many use. Very thought-provoking, this book will keep a smile on your face until the end.

On one level, this is an entertaining read for teenagers or anybody else who is interested in the problems of confronting one's own sexuality today. It shows the courage needed for "coming out" and clearly indicates the dangers posed by those advocating suppressing gay feelings and by homophobic bullies. The heart-warming story of the friendship between Pablo and Manuel has a happy ending, of course, and parents need have no qualms because they never go further than kissing.
I am some way past my teens, however, and I bought it mainly to see how Sanchez would deal with the Church's traditional condemnation of homosexuality. He succeeds in this by pointing out that sexual orientation is innate rather than acquired or chosen, and by indicating the weakness of the popular biblical arguments. He shoots down Leviticus with ease, and points out that the Genesis 19 story about Sodom was only one attempt to account for the city's destruction; that the Sodomites' main sin was their refusal to accept God's messengers. He might have dealt more effectively with Paul's attack by pointing out that the great man was outraged more by the abuse of power in high places, by promiscuity and genereral excess, than by love between members of the same sex.
This is a book to buy, re-read and reflect upon.

I began by thinking this work was an exaggeration, but became convinced of its reality as time passed. This is obviously experience of life in the 'Bible Belt', as lived by someone who in one respect doesn't fit in: his sexuality. The more I read, the more real it plainly was. The main character is wavering between bisexuality and homosexuality, both damned by the near-rabid evangelical beliefs of his community. He meets a similar person, but one openly gay, one who eventually pays the price of evangelically-driven homophobic violence. The 'exit' procedure (becoming 'normal') is dismissed, and a more sensible exposition of the most quoted biblical condemnations of alternative sexuality is provided by Manuel, the openly gay teenager. The thugs who derive some support from this hyper-religious atmosphere see their opportunity, and take it. The book provides a stark condemnation of the excessive religiosity tainting US political and social life at present, and the fate of those who don't conform. Recent history, including murders, presents us with a gruesome background to this story of social/religious intolerance. Our entire society must take it as a warning.
