Who knows what goes on in the mind of an introverted child. If no one takes the time to reach out to the child, a peer their own age, then I could see a child thinking there must be something wrong with themselves that no one wants to play with them. In author Neil Irani's beautiful story, The Goblin and the Girl, a young girl perceives herself to be a goblin because she doesn't seem to have any friends. She tries to hide under big hats and runs away when her hat is blown into the trees. The writing is simple and clear for young readers and the message is easy to understand. I would have liked to have seen the young girls teacher reaching out to her, even if that in itself didn't change her self-perception. I read this book to my children and it kept their attention with the colorful illustrations and simple message. I would recommend this book to parents of children who are, like the little girl, shy or self-conscious. I would also recommend it to parents with children who tend to make friends easy to remind them to watch for the children who just need a kind word or a friend. As the story illustrates, kindness can make a world of difference to a lonely child.
