Product Description

Review

`Against a shocking backdrop if recent historical events, Andrea Eames has used a fresh, candid voice to create an intimate, sensitive and moving debut novel.' --Metro

`A frank and unvarnished portrait of life behind the headlines, sharpened by details from the author's own Zimbabwean girlhood' --Daily Mail

`In her debut novel, Andrea Eames captures brilliantly the atmosphere of corroding trust that pervades the Coopers' farm'...`The sands of trust are forever shifting and Eames's description of how the two groups steer around and at times into each other crackles with tension and authenticity'...`Eames is a young writer with talent, whose novel tackles matters of substance' --The Guardian

`Eames's writing style is youthful and straight forward with occasional forages into really quite lyrical prose. Its freshness makes the book a deceptively easy read, but in no way does it undermine the seriousness and disturbing nature of the story' --Bookmunch.com

`Eames is a fluent and engaging writer and this debut novel signals real promise for her future' --The Independent

`This is a highly readable and engrossing addition to the many tragic stories of Mugabe's Zimbabwe' --Big Issue in the North

`This is a touching and assured debut, deceptively complex as Eames must work hard to get the balance between a young girl's development and the crisis in her home country just right, be careful not to let the personal either overwhelm or disappear. That she achieves this is a testament to her powers...Eames is definitely one to watch' --The Scotsman

Zimbabwe is on the brink of a political and civil revolution. Elsie, a teenage girl, is caught up in the unrelenting battle between white farmers and the black indigens. The blacks feel oppressed and are disillusioned after years in low paid menial jobs. The Whites in Zimbabwe want to remain in the country they have called home for over a century but the fury of the blacks, who have been surpressed over many years, is a force they have underestimated. The farmers defiantly stand their ground, wanting to keep farmlands owned by them for generations. The blacks see thiemselves as "the new future" and want thier lands back. The decison to live Zimbabwe was a very difficult one for Elsie's mother.

An enjoyable read.

unputdownable! 5 April 2011

Amazing, magical and richly descriptive book. I loved every page. Seen through the eyes of a girl who describes the magic of growing up in Africa. Elise finds the wonder in people she encounters and the mysterious "tokoloshe". The book becomes darker and darker as the political situation worsens and Elise's world changes forever.

I had quite a few sleepless nights, waking up at 3am wanting to read another chapter. This is a book I know I'm going to read again!
