In comparison to some of Walt Disney's other great live action films, such as: Mary Poppins; Bedknobs and Broomsticks; The Parent Trap and Swiss Family Robinson, The Gnome Mobile doesn't quite reach the same level, but it is still entertaining.

The story revolves around D.J. Mulrooney, a rich business man and owner ofMulrooney Lumber and his two children (Matthew Garber and Karen Dotrice, the children from Mary Poppins). When Mulrooney takes his grandchildren on a picnic. Granddaughter Elizabeth goes off in to the forest and she discovers a gnome named Jasper. Usually gnomes do not speak to humans, so at first he is shocked that both humand and gnomes alike share a common language. Jasper and his Grandpsa Knobby are the last of the gnomes and because of this he is starting to become see through. Knobby desires to see Jasper find a wife, but there are no gnome maidens.
Elizabeth assures the gnome that her granfather will help and after some persuasion he agrees. Tey set off in search of a new home, there are rumours of gnomes far north. So they set off in the grandfather's Rolls royce, which affectionaltely becomes nicknamed the 'Gnome Mobile'. From here the film floows the journey of the company, and the obstacles they encounter, with a comic twist on all proceedings, as is the flavour of the movie.

The only song in this film id 'The Gnome Mobile' written by the Sherman Brothers, the duo behind Mary Poppins, The Parent Trap, The Jungle Book, The Aristocats and many more disney classics. Although it's not a show stopper the song is quite catchy.

The visuals in the film are not quite as stunning as those used in the earlier film 'Darby O'Gill and the Little People' which had a similar focus on humans interacting with little people. Howevr there are still a few moments that look quite stunning. Although this film did not have the same budget as Darby O'Gill and where Darby was more a serious movie, this is a comedy of the sixties so as you can imagine there is plenty of slapstick along with gnomes behind dressed in all varieties of colours!

I have knocked off a star for this DVD because it is Pan and Scan, while in the past this was forgiveable, in this day and age I think it is ridiculous that pan and scan is still occuring. I know some people hate seeing those 'black bars' at the top and bottom of the screen but that doesn't mean the rest of us should be punished by having part of the picture chopped off!

All in all The Gnome Mobile is not a Disney masterpiece but it is very entertaining and one of the more memorable Disney films.

I had not heard of this one before but I love Disney films and this one was always in my amazon recommendations .
When I saw it for under three pounds I thought, you can't go wrong for that price.
After watching it, I have to say it was an absolute bargain, I loved it as did my two young children. It's certainly not quite up there with Mary Poppins and Bedknobs and Broomsticks but it's a fun movie and the picture is better than I expected, even the special effect were ok.
As for the DVD there isn't anything else on there but for the price you can't complain.

Well, what can I say about this film? It's Disney at its' finest - catchy tune, sweet little children, fantastic effects, AND a "message" in the story. It's a great film - one that you would expect to be on during the school hols, on BBC2 on a weekday morning! Aaaah, bring back childhood!

Totally brilliant the film is a switch off the brain n chuckle along. So amusing and maybe not the high graphics that kids are into today but still a good film.

Good but not for a 3 year old
Bought for a 3 year old but think this is a bit old for her. It is a bit slow to start and quite uneventful until the very end. Read more
