Book Description

13 Nov 2011
One of the most profound influences of globalisation is that people from everywhere are falling in love with people from everywhere else. The Globalisation of Love is about the whirls and twirls, the quirks and perks, the frustrations and the fun of a multicultural relationship. Multicultural couples have all the issues that exist in monocultural relationships, plus whatever colourful combination of culture, language, religion and ethnicity the couple bring into their marriage. Based on interviews with multicultural couples from around the world, The Globalisation of Love shows how they meet and fall in love, how they choose a country to live in, what happens in bilingual and trilingual families, how they deal with multicultural kids and careers, the consequences of having a family that looks like a mini-United Nations, how to laugh about cultural clashes that make you cry, how to share in prayer around the world, what is done for the holidays, what is cooking in the multicultural kitchen and even who is cooking it. There is a world of multicultural romance happening out there and it is all captured in The Globalisation of Love.

Review

REVIEW 1 " - like taking a course titled 'We Are the World' taught by a cultural anthropologist, a marriage therapist, and a talk show host all rolled into one. With knowledge, wisdom, and humour, Wendy helps us learn and laugh as she encourages us to chart our own paths to lasting multicultural love."
Joel Crohn, PhD, Author of Mixed Matches: How to Create Successful Interracial, Interethnic, and Interfaith Relationships REVIEW 2: " - an astute and entertaining look at love across cultures. If I had a GloLo partner I'd want smart, funny Wendy Williams as my new best friend." Terri A Karis, PhD Professor of Couple and Family Therapy, University of Wisconsin-Stout. Editor of Intercultural Couples: Exploring Diversity in Intimate Relationships REVIEW 3: " - a breezy, light-hearted, gossipy (but wise) take on many of the serious aspects of the globalisation of love. She makes it all sound like such fun that it may even cause a break-out of marriages across cultures." Dugan Romano, Author of Intercultural Marriage: Promises and Pitfalls

5.0 out of 5 stars The Globalisation of Love 17 Nov 2011
Format:Paperback
Canadian Author Wendy Williams has written a highly evocative, yet humorous guide to relationships that cross all frontiers. And given the fact she's married to an Austrian and now living in Vienna, she's certainly no stranger to the concept of mixed marriage herself.

With increasing numbers of people moving around the globe to live and work, love now overcomes barriers like never before and blended unions in all their forms are now everywhere we look.

With amusing anecdotes and witty repartee throughout, Williams has succeeded in writing something that is both enlightening and amusing.

Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must reading for multicultural couples 21 Jan 2013
By Annette
Format:Paperback
I just loved this book and highly recommend it to multicultural couples, and even their families and friends. The book discusses most of the big cultural issues and demonstrates that intercultural couples probably have more things to deal with, such as culture, religion and even travelling for the holidays. Yet the book is written in such an easy and positive style. It is fun to read and makes me feel proud to be in a multicultural family. The author covers the subjects respectfully. I highlighted many sections and read it together with my husband. We were both appreciative for the understanding and insight. Reading this book helped us to understand each other better as a multicultural couple. It is definitely 5 stars.

The research that went into this book must have been phenonemal. I loved the way the personalities of the interviees came through and the way that the author uses her own personal experiences. Her observations are sharp and incisive, and anyone in a multicultural relationship will be able to identify with this book. It's funny and lighthearted at the same time - I couldn't put it down and kept chuckling to myself the whole way through! If you are living in a multicultural environment (or thinking of doing so), this book will have you going 'ah, yes!' and will make you smile from cover to cover. On a serious note, it gives you an idea of the reality of mixing different cultural backgrounds and how communication and interaction works between us all.
