Product Description

Part memoir, part business manual, and 100% juicy—the inside story of Juicy Couture, one of the most iconic brands of our times

While working together at a Los Angeles boutique, Pamela Skaist-Levy and Gela Nash-Taylor became fast and furious friends over the impossibility of finding the perfect T-shirt. Following their vision of comfortable, fitted T-shirts, they set up shop in Gela’s one-bedroom Hollywood apartment with $200 and one rule: Whatever they did, they both had to be obsessed by it. The best friends’ project became Juicy Couture. Pam and Gela eventually sold their company to Liz Claiborne for $50 million, but not before they created a whole new genre of casual clothing that came to define California cool.

Pamela and Gela built an empire from the ground up, using themselves as models to build their patterns and placing their merchandise by storming into stores and handing out samples. They balanced careful growth with innovative tactics—sending Madonna a tracksuit with her nickname, Madge, embroidered on it—and created a unique, bold, and unconventional business plan that was all their own: the Glitter Plan.

Now, Pam and Gela reveal the secrets of Juicy’s success: how they learned to find and stick with the right colleagues and trust their instincts when it became time to move on to their next project. They also share their missteps and hilarious lessons learned—like the time robbers stole one thousand pairs of maternity shortalls, which the partners took as the first sign to get out of the maternity clothing business.

Told in the bright, cheery voice that defines Juicy style even today, The Glitter Plan shows readers how to transform passion and ideas into business success. Aspiring designers, Juicy fans, and business readers of all stripes will be enthralled by the story of spirit and savvy behind Pam and Gela’s multimillion-dollar fashion empire.

4.0 out of 5 stars They surprised me! 5 Jun 2014
By Rhonda R - Published on

I'm not a fashion diva...and I can honestly say I've never worn a single Juicy item in my life. I am, however, a fan of Duran Duran (I figure full-disclosure is best), and I am a co-author of a blog dedicated to Duran Duran fans. So, when John Taylor mentioned that his wife Gela had written this book, I was curious. I knew enough about Juicy Couture to know it had been sold to Liz Claiborne for a staggering amount of money, but that was about it. I had no idea how the company started, or the series of events that took them from point A to B.

The story of Pam and Gela surprised me. I would have never thought for a red-hot minute that either of them would be anything like me and my *own* partner-in-crime (my writing partner), but I found myself chuckling over some of the stories (the scene at the airport while waiting for a plane to Paris sounds vaguely familiar...) and in awe of their fearless nature. They had a dream, an obsession, and went for it. Who can really fault that?

I thought the book was inspirational, entertaining - and I've even reviewed it on my own blog (I bought my own copy of the book and was not asked for a review), recommending it to Duran Duran fans alike. I think just about anyone can glean something from this story, whether you've got a great partner-in-crime; an obsession, or even what you think might be a pie-in-the-sky business idea. I love the "can-do" attitude, and it was a quick and easy read besides. The tips at the end of each chapter were really good too - they were like a snapshot of what you'd just read. Well done!

4.0 out of 5 stars All That Glitters Is Gold 20 Jun 2014
By Jenna Frye - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition
I have been reading a lot of books on women entrepreneurs lately and this one surprised me. I will be honest that I didn't exactly go into this one with high hopes. I had just read #Girlboss by Sophia Amoruso which had put a spark under my butt and I didn't think another book could even come close. I was wrong. The Glitter Plan was the cup of tea that I truly needed and and this one smoked them all.

This is what I would consider a business memoir about two women who were brought together by what could only be fate. I think they were meant to be in the same womb because they are so connected that it is insane. I never had a sister or bonded with another person in such a sense that it made me a little sad that I missed out on that experience in life.

These two women started from nothing, really. A mere $200 in the early nineties and in Los Angeles to boot, is basically pocket change. But they turned that money into a thriving business. Unfortunately, they learned the downs of taking their smaller business mainstream to the guys in suits that have nothing in mind but stock value. Eventually, their piece of magic plummeted.

Fortunately, this did not dissuade them and they just picked themselves up, wiped off the dirt, and started brand new but with more knowledge and wisdom than the first time. And their clothes are in Bergdorf Goodman of all places...that's where I plan to be one day.

What I like about these two is that they are original, honest, and true to themselves. They are a bit eccentric, but that is what is most important in the fashion world. I will admit that I was comparing myself to them a lot, as in "I love candy too!", "I have a great idea too!" You get the point.

I've been looking for something to get me in the right direction because recently I was engaged to someone I had been with for quite some time. In December I had to have major surgery and after my recovery period was over, I came to find out the place that I worked is under a hiring freeze. A very long hiring freeze! I've been kind of lost and trying to figure out where to go next and also learning that jobs aren't easy to come by anymore. The kicker is that my fiance (ex fiance-who is a surgeon and financially comfortable) cut the cord because he didn't like me unemployed and didn't want to feel like he was 'taking care' of me while I searched. Therefore, I am in a situation where I don't know where rent is coming from on a daily basis. So, I am at the bottom point where I need to push ahead or I am going to sink fast. Because selling clothes on eBay ins't going to pay my bills.

Before even starting this book, I had been toying with this great idea that I know would trend, big time. I have talked to a manufacture company in North Carolina about helping me design my prototype, etc. etc. And although this is a daunting task to do alone as you have no one there to keep the excitement up, this book was kind of like having my own Gela or my own Pam to push me along, actually I had them both, duh.

So thanks to these two. You never know, something great just might come from their kindness in sharing their knowledge. I really was bummed with the book was over because I truly felt like I was saying goodbye to two good friends. They had a way of making you feel like they were really letting you in on a secret and I loved that. I highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars fascinating account of the rise and fall of juicy 2 Jun 2014

Everyone "knows" Juicy Couture and the basic framework of the story: Two girls form a fashion partnership and sell millions of velour track suits... This book provides lots of fun details and inspiration for the entrepreneurial spirit in us all. Although I knew how it would end, I couldn't put it down!

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Graduation gift 31 May 2014
By Louise H Abnee - Published on
I loved this book. It's a really quick/easy read but incredibly inspirational. I was laughing at some of their antics with my friends and also feeling nostalgic for the time that all of us would be wearing matching Juicy Couture pants. But it was also fascinating to learn how this global empire was started from the ground up. I think it's great for young girls who are looking to start their own business or get into the fashion world. It's not the most sophisticated book, but definitely a fun read.

I knew a little about the Juicy Girls from fashion mag articles here and there, but I had now idea! The good old american dream with pizazz. I wish this book was around when I was a bit younger. Who knows.... it was so inspiring, I just might have become an entrepreneur. I loved that the book was a bio and a how to as well! Now if I could just find that old sweatsuit that I have squirreled away somewhere in the attic.....
