Why oh why has someone not reviewed this book yet? I can contrast this easily in terms of anarchism/70's lifestyle (but sans student life in Ireland) with Jo Brand's recent 'It's Different For Girls'. I found Ms Brand's book to be contrived both in terms of 70's anarchistic, rebellious teenager lifestyle and also family-life in general but not Ms Evans book.
Sadly I was a generation too late for the 70's teenager but I had friends who lived through it and remember vague bits of it as seen through a child's eyes. Maeve's story is a heart-rending stomp through her life from being at home taunted by her father to living the student lifestyle and desparately trying to fit in being a punk but finding parts of this lifestyle abhor her! Very funny and touching, I have read this book so many times, I even sort of wish there was a sequel, Ms Evans is a fabulous writer and I think this sort of book should be on the curriculum for teenagers everywhere. Gives one an understanding of how life changes dramatically and also advice to follow your dreams. Fantastic!
