Product Description

Review

"From the first moment I heard Emily sing, I knew that she was special…she graces the English folk scene" --Shirley Collins.

"This is a remarkable work by a singer and writer so totally consumed by folk song and storytelling that she s moved to interpret and reposition it in such a boldly individual fashion." --fRoots

Uncut, June 2010

A bewitching collection from one of the new British folk scene's most beguiling presences - ****

My husband is a big folk fan, but I wouldn't describe myself as such. I had never heard of Emily Portman until I heard the song "Sirens" featured on the radio one night (Radcliffe & Maconie show?) while relaxing in the bath and was utterly blown away by it. Extraordinary! It gave me goose bumps... I got straight out of the bath and found the album on Amazon before I could risk forgetting the artist's name.
I bought the album for my husband as a surprise but have found myself playing it constantly. The lyrics, the melodies, the arrangements, everything, are quite spellbinding. The title of the album (with its reference to the transformational qualities of magic making everyday things take on magical qualities) is perfectly apt for this album. I LOVE IT. If you like folk music, if you like poetry, if you enjoy traditional dark stories (Grimm etc) or just enjoy listening to pure voices, accomplished musicians and eerie arrangements, you will love this too.

Emily Portman has evolved from her early days with The Devil's Interval and ventured out to produce a great selection of modern folk songs, most of which she has written herself for this album. The songs are witty, have wonderful harmonies and show a solid creative flare which is attracting good reviews from the press and live performances on the radio.

She is an exciting addition to the folk scene & I'm sure she will become a big name in the future. Highly recommended.

Underpined by fables and folklore, then characterised by the slenderest melodic lines from sumptuously recorded guitar, harp and strings 'The Glamoury' encapsulates the mood of Shirley Collins and Karine Polwart. However, there's also an additional genreless contemporary quality contained in these addictive stories that fans of artists as far flung as Joanna Newsom could appreciate.

Wrapped in Emily Portman's distinctive voice the whole mood is highly artistic, yet at its heart is a wellspring of very real human emotion: Fabulous 21st century folk!

Mystical and Charming
I'm not a folk music follower, but this is something I've never heard before. Other worldly, it travels through territories which under normal circumstances I'd rather not go. Read more

only four stars because my review is hearsay
I bought this for my son for his birthday and have never listened to it; but my son is very happy with it, and I expect you will be also.

Beautiful begiling bewitching
Lovely, enchanting, slightly gothic New English Folk.
To many adjectives for a sensible review I know, but a simple joy.

FRom hearing the first song, "Bones and Feathers", I was captivated by this album. Twelve gothic tales beautifully realised by Emily Portman.
