Book Description

4 Oct 2007 1906021171 978-1906021177
This is the original dangerous book for girls...unrevised since 1903! For a girl these days, it may be fashionable to know how to encrypt your text messages, set up your own webpage, and compile the ultimate playlist...But what about the things that really matter, the things that mattered to girls back in 1903 - what to wear when exercising with a Sandow Grip Dumb-Bell, how to give your poodle a French clip, and how to avoid the "evils of excessive tea drinking..." "The Girls' Empire" is the real thing - written at the beginning of the twentieth century, it sets out to inform and entertain girls - with short stories, career advice, Cosy Corner Chats, and much much more. This new potted edition is a wonderfully evocative slice of history. By turns hilarious and poignant, many of its observations and instructions remain quaintly relevant today.

4.0 out of 5 stars Imperialism for Women 26 Jun 2009
By Casey Shea - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This book is great for anyone interested in the British Empire or women's history. While boys read the Boy's Own Paper, filled with adventure stories, British girls of the Victorian period read stories about influential women such as Florence Nightingale. The Girls' Empire Annual was desinged to educate women on domesticity while training them to become modern women. The articles in this collection cover subjects from sports and fitness to cooking and manners. They show the increasing equality between men and women, during the suffragette movement, and encourage girls to join the work force alongside their brothers. The ultimate purpose of these articles was to turn young girls into perfect imperial subjects.
