If you are mulling over whether to buy this or the extended editions then that will really depend on how much you enjoyed them.
Ive seen both versions and loved them both BUT if you are a casual fan who wants a faster pace then I would suggest this, The Girl Trilogy, as the extended editions, which I enjoyed very much, are, by their very extendedness( is that a real word?haha), are a bit long and do slow the pace right down.
So, while both are of equal merit it really depends on the viewer.Faster pace, Girl Trilogy, slower pace with more story then Extended, but equally enjoyable.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2009) - 4/5

A good movie that stands on its own with a solid mystery and intriguing puzzle-solving. Noomi Rapace is great as Lisbeth Salander but the director misses a lot of chances for genuine atmosphere and horror, and the film seems very flat for the most part.

The Girl who Played with Fire (2009) - 3/5

Not so much a continuation of the first movie but a tiresome tangent into Lisbeth Salander's past. Noomi Rapace is back but in physical presence only. She looks and acts nothing like she did before. This sequel is merely a glorified TV movie that cannot escape the cheap orange and teal CSI photography that is so easy for lazy directors to emulate.

The Girl who Kicked the Hornets Nest (2009) - 2/5

Lots of talk, no action. Lots of exposition, no excitement. No one involved in this movie seemed to understand that the dialogue-heavy novel was not remotely theatrical and would not translate well to a TV movie, or any kind of movie. It's a continuation of the confusing, contrived, convoluted plot of the previous movie with dozens of characters coming and going with no indication of who they are or why they are important and by this point I am amazed that there is anyone left who actually cares.

As the first movie in the series was the only one intended for the cinema it's the only one in 2.35:1 (albeit fake Super-35 widescreen) and the other two are in 1.78:1 as they were shot on 16mm. All of them look decent-to-good in 1080p with inconsistent sound as the first in old-fashioned Dolby 5.1 only and the others being in DTS HD-MA.

3 excellent films. Great acting, compelling plots & visually stunning

If you want to be entertained rather than distracted, buy these, not the tacky US remake.

Gripping and would strongly recommend. The actors are excellent with brilliant story which held my attention from start to finish. Love the female actor and although violent it tells the story just right with so much emotion. Someone suggested i watch it and so pleased a real gem, strongly recommend, totally engrossing.

These films speak for themselves, well acted, great story and excellent film transfer.
I got these to have as a companion to the Millennium trilogy box set on Blu-Ray and well worth having they are.
