5.0 out of 5 stars Life in the British legation in China 4 Oct. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This really gives a picture of the life of expats in China in the 20s and 30s through the eyes of a young woman who escapes there to get away from an unhappy love affair. Her morals and moral musings are almost as foreign to the modern reader as the life of the Brits and Chinese that she describes. The author lived here at the time and you can feel the authenticity roll off the page. Fascinating.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good read 25 Mar. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A superb look at China in a previous era. Detailed knowledge of how the legation worked in Peking and the Foreign Office. Wonderful insight into the Forbidden City, surrounding countryside and a vanished way of life.

5.0 out of 5 stars China times 30 Aug. 2011
By Rata
Format:Paperback
I enjoyed this book about life and times in China in that period. She provides very good descriptions of people and places, more detailed than modern books I think. She conveys the intrigues and personalties of the foreigners in a small community very well. Will try and find other titles by her.
