Book Description

Nov 2001
Imagine a wonderfully rude, children's version of "It's a Wonderful Life." At the beginning of the tale we have a good man, a caring man, heading for his job as a cookie-taster…but also heading for a terrible fate (he's about to step in something smelly.) Is this an accident (no!) Who's responsible? (the Gigglers, that's who! Elfen creatures whose pranks punish wayward adults.) What did he do to deserve this (he yelled at his children unfairly, but actually this was a bit of a misunderstanding….) Can the impending mess be avoided (Possibly!)

Working backward, Roddy Doyle spins the hilarious tale of Mr. Mack, his wife Billy Jean, his three children Robbie, Jimmy, and Kayla, their dog Rover (in many ways the STAR of the show) and, of course, the irrepressible, sometimes hasty, but well-meaning Gigglers.

A thoroughly silly, occasionally subversive, periodically tender, completely satisfying read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A hoot for all! 18 Oct 2001
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Intrigued at Doyle's daliance into children's fiction, the dog on the cover inspired my five-year old to pick it up. A group of Gigglers exist to ensure children get fairly treated by adults, wreaking revenge in the worst possible way on adults daft enough to say "because i said so!"
We were hooked from the first page when we dicovered the whole story hinges on dog poo. At first it seems you may find out if Mr Mack does indeed get the Giggler treatment but then it becomes apparent with Doyles ingenious mockery of chapter headings that we are to be kept in suspense until the smelly end!
A fab read for all ages with amusing illustrations that bring the story to life i, (that was a slip i meant my daughter!) look forward to the next children's story from Roddy Doyle.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious 21 May 2004

I read this story to my Year Five class, who couldn't quite believe that I was reading it to them. A highly amusing tale about small creatures who 'get adults back' when they are mean to children. Very funny, with amusing characters that the children really identify with. Wonderful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent - for all ages 30 Aug 2003
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I bought this book to read to my Primary 3/4 class (aged 7 and 8), I've since also read it to a P6/7 (aged 10 and 11). We've all, without exception, loved it. For all adults out there - if you ever step on the awful "poo" you'll spend ages wondering what you've done to upset a Giggler!!
