Book Description

5 Jun 2013
The Gift of Alzheimer’s is a ground breaking story that brings insight and understanding to Alzheimer’s and shines a positive light on this devastating disease. Maggie La Tourelle, a psychotherapist and healer, documents her evolving relationship with her mother who has Alzheimer’s, interprets what she is saying and gives a deeply moving account of their journey together. This multidimensional story has all the characteristics of an exciting novel with Maggie La Tourelle as the storyteller. Set in provincial Scotland, it exposes the constraining and unjust social mores of the time. You are drawn into the drama of the family that results from this, and journey with them in their quest for resolution. At a practical level the book informs the reader about the vicissitudes of Alzheimer’s, what to do and how to do it. It emphasises the importance of connecting with an open heart and seeking meaning in the midst of confusion with an open mind. At an emotional level it demonstrates the healing power of love and that it is never too late to seek redemption and heal the past. At a soul and spiritual level it is an example of conscious dying, something largely lost in our modern day, Western society. It includes numerous unsolicited examples of ESP, describes the intricate process of dying and reveals many mysteries from beyond the veil. Viewing what happened on this journey in the light of research in the field, Maggie La Tourelle draws certain conclusions and offers a new programme to help others coping with Alzheimer’s. She marvels at the extraordinary transformation that took place in all the members of her family and considers how, what she has learned from this life-changing journey might be of value to us all in our lives now.

Thank you Maggie so much. You came to me just when I needed you. I was so down, and the information out there is so clynical and confusing. I was looking for something that would help me to understand how to make sense of the strange and sometimes hurtful language of Alzheimers. This book "came to me" at exactly the right time. My Mother moved in with me in March, and oh my goodness it's been hard for both of us to settle to the change. Early days I know, but just when I thought it was all a terrible mistake I found The Gift of Alzheimers and this book was exactly what we both needed. Maggie has taught me to really listen and not just "listen". And by doing that I've learnt so much about my mother, myself, our past, present and our futures.
Maggie has opened my heart,my mind and my inner psyche. Although Mum has no idea that I've read the book, I'm sure she can see a difference in me. She's settling much better, and we "communite" much better since Maggie has unlocked me. Now, together we are allowing time to pass in each others company in a calm, fun, deeply enlightening and nurturing way. I understand now that in her own way Mum is teaching me the lessons I will need for when it's my turn, and at the same time I'm privlidged to watch her as the layers unfold. Without Maggie helping to unlock my mind I don't think I would have been able to see what was right in front of me all the time. Thank you for sharing your life with us Maggie, you are an amazing woman and a real Mother to everyone who needs your help. I can't praise this book highly enough, the journey is just starting, I don't know when it will end, but I'm not frightened and together we'll dance all the way. xx

`The Gift of Alzheimer's' works on so many levels. It is a story about a mother and daughter, an exploration of Alzheimer's and a journey into the deeper realms of our humanity. I found it both touching and profound. I hope many people struggling with a relative who has Alzheimer's find solace and hope in this book. I heartily recommend it!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Gift of Alzheimer's 15 April 2013
Format:Paperback
This book should be required reading. Maggie La Tourelle has found a hugely moving and yet simple way to present extraordinary and often surprising truths about Alzheimer's. It will be of immense support to those with relatives or friends who have Alzheimer's or dementia. For those in the medical profession La Tourelle's insights into creative and compassionate care are important ones. On another level, it is an exceptional journey for anyone who reads it, into the transforming power of love.

Before reading this book, I wouldn’t have put the two words gift and Alzheimer’s together but in her book Maggie LaTourelle has turned the concept, that there is nothing to be gained from this disease, on its head! As a personal friend of the author and chatting to her about her trips to and from Scotland, I got glimpses of Maggie’s journey with her mother as she progressed through this disease. I suspected something very special was happening between them but it wasn’t until I read The Gift of Alzheimer’s that I fully understood the breadth and depth of their experience together. Maggie’s diligence in recording and relaying her mother’s very open and candid comments made fascinating reading. I was moved to tears on many a page followed by bursts of uncontrollable laugher on others.

The family history and dynamics which Maggie introduces early in the book and at intervals throughout, provides insight into the turmoil her mother struggled to resolve during the final stages of Alzheimer’s. If that was insightful to read, it was more than surpassed by her mother’s extraordinary comments, communicated in a very matter of fact way, about her increasing experiences with the spirit world, family members who had passed away and the development of psychic skills. Backed by scientific research and studies, Maggie suggests that these experiences increase as the disease progresses and areas of the brain deteriorate allowing for other areas to develop and take their place. This is vividly illustrated as her mother let go of this world by healing old hurts and connecting with what lies beyond.

This book will bring comfort and hope to many whose relatives have this disease and help them view its progression in a very different and refreshing light.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Gift of Altzheimer's 11 May 2013
Format:Paperback
This is a very positive book about a subject that is usually met with negativity and fear. There is an almost total lack of education at school age and beyond in the subject of ageing, the challenges it may present and the change in our relationship to our parents from the one we were familiar with as children - the love, trust and dependence we felt towards them as our protectors and nurturers - to one where they become the vulnerable ones in need of our care, love and support as they pass into old age. That this process is the natural way that our life journey takes and that the journey can be rich and rewarding for both parent and child is beautifully related in this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars High Praise 2 May 2013

Just like one of the earlier reviewers I could not put the book down. It is an amazing achievement to express the journey in such well written words and to show how both Maggie and her mother developed in such a beautiful manner. It opened my heart and gave me great pleasure, reduced my fears and inspired hope too. Thank you! The book deserves all the accolades! Christianne Heal
