Jumbeelia, a girl giant, loves the stories of the iggly plop who climbed up the bimblestonk and was chased back down again by a giant. Growing her own bimblestonk, she climbs down it and finds a whole world of iggly plops - our world, in fact, where Colette, Stephen and Poppy are very surprised to find themselves collected up into a bag and carried off back up the beanstalk. So begins a wild and wonderful tale of how three children escape from an overenthusiastic giant girl, her very-pregnant giant mum, and her very nasty adolescent giant brother.
About the Author
Julia Donaldson’s writing career started when she was a penniless student in Paris, and went busking. Busking led to song-writing, including two musicals and countless songs for children’s television. It was only when one of Julia’s songs, "A Squash and a Squeeze", was made into a picture book that she began writing songs without tunes. Her rhyming stories - including THE GRUFFALO and ROOM ON THE BROOM (both published by Macmillan) – have won many prizes and regularly top the UK picture-book bestseller charts. For Egmont, she has written the picture book Night Monkey, Day Monkey, gorgeously illustrated by Lucy Richards.
Julia has also written books for beginner readers, such as the Banana books Spinderella and Follow the Swallow, and enjoys writing plays for children and teenagers, including Bombs and Blackberries (Hodder) which is about the Second World War.
Egmont has published Julia’s novel for 7-11-year olds, The Giants and the Joneses. It is about three children who are kidnapped by a child-collecting girl giant, and features a special giant language.
For three years Julia was writer in residence for Easterhouse, helping children and adults with their own writing. She also visits theatres, schools, libraries and writers’ groups to do performances, workshops and talks.

Once you discover the glossary in the back, giving the English equivalent for the Giant's language that is scattered throughout the text, the book is truly a joy to read with your child! There is a unique richness to the language used in the book and there are opportunities for speculative thought processes for the children in nearly every page, making for exciting reading. I would highly recommend this 'Jack and the Beanstalk'-type-story, from the Giant's persective. Great for girls & boys alike.

This is a great book - I bought it from a catalogue as the concept appealed to me and you can't go far wrong with a Julia Donaldson. In a nutshell, a big giant girl climbs down a beanstalk and takes a few human children home and puts them to live in the dolls house from which they escape, adventuring on the way. It's a lovely story for both boys and girls from about 5 and one they'll keep re-reading til they get to secondary school. I read it to my daughter (5 and a half) who loved it. There are pictures at the beginning of each chapter, enough to give her a handle to pin her own imagination too. She was completely taken with the idea of another language, especially one quite so silly (though guesssable in context) as `iggly plop' for humans, strimpchogger, bobbaleely and squerple, for lawn mower, baby and worm respectively. If you think you child would like the borrowers biut thats a bit old-fashioned, this is equally appealing but written for today's children. Superb!

I am reading this book to my six year old twin daughters. They love the occasional use of 'giant language', and have amazing recall of what the words mean - but they also like looking words up in the glossary, which can make the bedtime story a bit longer than usual! You have been warned.

A good find

Superb; Donaldson for older readers
Having been a devotee of Julia Donaldson's books ever since my son (now 7.5) was born, I was delighted to discover this one, which I recently read to my son as a bedtime story. Read more

Oh Dear, I love Julia Donaldson too, I have quite a collection now but, I don't like the story at all, infact its creepy and alittle absurd even for me. Read more
