The Giant Among Us, by Troy Denning, is Book 2 in The Twilight Giants Trilogy set in the Forgotten Realms universe. The book continues the story of the firbolg scout, Tavis Burden, and his Queen, Brianna of Hartwick from the previous book in the trilogy,
The Ogre's Pact (Forgotten Realms: The Twilight Giants). As a result of the previous novel the realm of Hartsvale is now at war with all of the giant tribes and only Tavis Burden can protect the realm. However, events have now put Tavis in a position where he has to leave the queen that he loves in order to save her, unfortunately that leaves the queen exposed to threats while he is away.
The book is well written and continues the character development from the previous book although unfortunately some of the characters behaviour and actions continue to be predictable and stereotypical. The author also manages to introduce many new types of giant that were not explored in any great depth in the previous book in the trilogy, particularly hill giants, ettins, frost giants and stone giants. The action sequences also continue to be well written and excellently describe the fight sequences, taking into account the size differences between the combatants and choreographing it perfectly.
Overall, this is a good sequel that continues to explore giants in more detail, that should appeal to Forgotten Realms fans or anyone who enjoyed the first book in the trilogy,
The Ogre's Pact (Forgotten Realms: The Twilight Giants).
