The Ghosts of Oxford Street was a short film made in 1991 documenting the history of Oxford Street, loosely narrated by Malcolm McClaren who penned and recorded the title track 'Ghosts of Oxford Street' with the session singer Alison Limerick. Rarely repeated on Channel4 but available on its on demand service. From humble country road to the most fashionable street in Europe, Oxford Street has been home to such colourful characters as highwayman Jack Wild, writer and opium addict Thomas de Quincy and shopping impresario Gordon Selfridge.

The album opens with the 1956 classic 'Merry Christmas Baby' by Charles Brown and then moves on to the theme track a catchy McLaren and Pete Waterman collaboration. John Pickard (grange Hill, 2 point 4 children and Hollyoaks) who acts s young Malcolm McLaren in the film signs a version of the Oliver! song 'Got to pick a pocket or two' which is the followed by two Tom Jones tracks - Money and Nobody knows you when you're down and out which were songs coving the rise and fall of Gordon Selfridge of Selfridges fame. Next comes the Rebel MC's Rich ah Getting Richer.

The Happy Monday now with their cover of the Bee Gees classic 'Staying Alive' used in the film to cover the history of the Tyburn Gallows at Marble Arch. Sinead O'Connor signs a beautiful and haunting rendition of the popular Christmas Carol 'Silent Night'. Kirsty McColl andthe Pogues next with their Shopping Mall classic 'Fairytale of New York.' The CD finishes off with the popular classical piece by Pochielli The Dance of the Hours.

So there you go a trip down Oxford Street at Christmas with an American Blues Artist, a Welsh crooner, a couple of Irish, the pride of 1990s Manchester, a British Rapper, a kid from Grange Hill and some Italian opera!

Loved the TV show years ago and wrecked the last copy of this soundtrack I had. If you've never heard it, it's worth a listen for the eclectic mix if artists and songs. If the DVD ever comes out, I'm off to get that too....
