Like Lanyon's other books, this is a good read with the plot deftly twisting and turning to throw the reader off balance. The characters are wll developed and change through the tale.
Here's the reason for only awarding four stars. The characters are too similar to the Adrien English books. The lead character is young and sickly asthmatic painter, rather than a writer with a heart condition, and the second character is a butch ex navy seal rather than a closeted cop. The only other problem I had was that the weather which is described throughout somehow doesn't really create the feeling of menace and the brewing storm.
All that said, however, this is a high gothic camp thriller, with a hounted house, a batty old lady, a sex bomb on the run from the mob, missing treasure and secret passageways, reclusive neighbours, a grumpy landlady and indifferent police, couple that with an asthmatic painter and a gay navy seal with Lanyon's ability and you get a good read. I am sure he can do better though, it's as though he coasted a bit on this one.
