Since the deserved success of "Ringu", the DVD market has seen a surge of releases like "The Ghost" - eerie ghost stories often from Japan or (as in this case) Korea. Many of these films have much to recommend them (and I would especially recommend "Ringu" itself, "The Eye", "The Grudge" and "A Tale of Two Sisters"). But with so much so-called "Asian Horror" now available, which to choose? It's easy to see why some reviewers are becoming jaded about "yet another long-haired ghost..."

At first glance, and for a fair portion of the movie, "The Ghost" looks like it could be an ordinary "Ringu"-by-numbers clone. Vengeful long-haired ghost? Check. Obsession with water? Shades of "Dark Water" there. Personality confusion? Could be "A Tale of Two Sisters".

But actually there is a lot here to enjoy. The central idea is quite neat and makes for an enjoyable thriller - an amnesiac must find out about her past as her old friends begin to die suspiciously. The central mystery may seem a bit ordinary as time goes on, but there's a neat twist near the end to keep you guessing and make you question the entire film. This gives "The Ghost" a touch of originality, and the beautiful look of the film makes it well worth watching.

As the other reviewers have noted this film does stick to the now familiar conventions of the Asian horror genre, but what marks it out is how beautifully shot it is and the confidence and style it exudes.

The plot seems a fairly simple tale of haunting after the use of a ouiji board however it soon becomes apparent there is more to this tale and offers quite an interesting twist at the end.

What I liked about this film was the slick style, what particularly stuck with me was the image of the body floating in the water very serenely, it was a very beautiful shot that reminded me of Ada's vision of suicide in 'The Piano'.

I don't know that the film was particularly scary, but the story and characters were well thought out and the filming was executed with class. I would recommend this to fans of Asian Horror although if like me you're a bit old hat at this genre now then don't expect great scares.

The very end bothered me slightly, I felt that "they think it's all over but there's more to come" sly look from a market worker seemed a bit contrived and unnecessary. In a way I think that the director should have gone with the sadder ending or at least offered the open ending with a little more subtley. Cut off the last 2 minutes of this film and its a great addition to the genre.

This movie is along the lines of Ringu and The Grudge. Scary long haired dead girl roaming around killing little asian teenagers. It sounds quite unoriginal so far doesn't it. But don't worry it gets better the more you watch it.

The movie itself is about a girl who lost her memory and tries to recover it whilst her friends are being found dead by drowning. That part is quite ordinary with some good creepy moments. the second half of the movie is where the story gets really interesting and different.

The movie holds some excellent plot twists and a fantastic scene where the scary ghost girl crawls out of a puddle on the floor. The actors/actresses are really good at their parts and the music is very well done.

I would easily recommend this to anyone who likes Asian horror. It starts off abit unoriginal but makes it's own path after a while.

:)
