Product Description

“The journey from the head to the hand is perilous and lined with bodies. It is the road on which nearly everyone who wants to write—and many of the people who do write—get lost.”

So writes Ann Patchett in "The Getaway Car", a wry, wisdom-packed memoir of her life as a writer. Here, for the first time, one of America’s most celebrated authors ("State of Wonder", "Bel Canto", "Truth and Beauty"), talks at length about her literary career—the highs and the lows—and shares advice on the craft and art of writing. In this fascinating look at the development of a novelist, we meet Patchett’s mentors (Allan Gurganas, Grace Paley, Russell Banks), see where she made wrong turns (poetry), and learn how she gets the pages written (an unromantic process of pure hard work). Woven through engaging anecdotes from Patchett’s life are lessons about writing that offer an inside peek into the storytelling process and provide a blueprint for anyone wanting to give writing a serious try. The bestselling author gives pointers on everything from finding ideas to constructing a plot to combating writer’s block. More than that, she conveys the joys and rewards of a life spent reading and writing.

“What I like about the job of being a novelist, and at the same time what I find so exhausting about it, is that it’s the closest thing to being God that you’re ever going to get,” she writes. “All of the decisions are yours. You decide when the sun comes up. You decide who gets to fall in love...”

In this Byliner Original by the new digital publisher Byliner, "The Getaway Car" is a delightful autobiography-cum-user’s guide that appeals to both aspiring writers and anyone who loves a great story.

An enjoyable and honest insight into what it takes to be a writer - "only a few of us are going to be willing to break our own hearts by trading in the living beauty of imagination for the stark disappointment of words."

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant and inspiring 28 Jun 2013

I'm a huge Ann Patchett fan and as an aspiring writer of fiction found this a really encouraging and useful book - yes, says Patchett, it is hard work, even for her. Good to know. Read this in one sitting and will read it again if I get lost in a mess of words and wondering what happened to all that 'inspiration'.

4.0 out of 5 stars Write book. Wrong title. 23 Mar 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
A refreshingly honest account of what writing really means to an author... but I almost skipped past it because I thought it was a short crime story! Would suggest a subtitle to make the contents clearer.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for would-be writers 8 Nov 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Anyone who has read and admired Ann Patchett's novels will enjoy this, but for anyone who wants to write fiction it is required reading. It tracks her somewhat erratic route to becoming a successful novelist. Learning by trial and error, she leaves no doubt of how difficult, rigorous and relentless that path is. She also offers some very pertinent rules of what the job - and make no mistake it is a job - entails.

Beautifully and entertainingly written and full of wisdom.

I believe that, more than anything else, this grief of constantly having to face down our own inadequacies is what keeps people from being writers. Forgiveness, therefore, is key. I can’t write the book I want to write, but I can and will write the book I am capable of writing. Again and again throughout the course of my life I will forgive myself. "e;
