Product Description

Product Description

The official history of the German occupation of the Channel Islands, this book is based on previously untapped sources of information, including papers from Government departments, the Island's own wartime files, as well as files left behind by the Feldkommandantur in Guernsey and Jersey. Dr Cruickshank provides a full account of the German invasion, the subsequent landings of various British agents, raids, and of an attempt by psychological warfare to end the Occupation. He also looks at how the islanders and Wehrmacht lived, the reality of collaboration with the occupying powers, and the extent of support for the Resistance. The significance of this episode in the history of the Second World War, which the Germans saw as their first conquest of British soil and a springboard to further occupation of British territory, is essential reading for anyone interested in the war.

About the Author

This may be official history, but it is highly engaging, and clearly there is plenty of archival research. What is controversial, of course, even today, are the attempts to assess whether there was collaboration - and what was sensible keeping of 'low profiles' under potential mortal danger. Some minor points have been clarified by subsequent works.

Not new but well recommended.

Engaging and readable 27 Nov 2008

A detailed account of this period when Nazi Germany occupied a portion of British territory. It covers all the key areas in a methodical and readable way. The maps could be better though and a timeline of key dates would be useful.

Excellent product! 10 Dec 2011
Format:Paperback
A perfect book! I have had problems re other sellers' descriptions, but this book might have been selected from a bookstand. I am most sincerely grateful that I have (at last!) found a seller with integrity: thank you!

ALSO... The book arrived so quickly I was delighted! My wife and I are currently watching 'Island At War'. Now, I can read the 'real' history as I continue to watch the series.

My wife might complain that I'm boring her with too many facts, but this is hardly your concern - !!!!

I deeply appreciate the book, in this excellent condition, at this most amazing price. Thanks again!

I shall take note of your details and would recommend anyone to shop with you.
Well done.
