This boxed set of Depardieu films contains 4 films: Trop Belle Pour Toi, Les Miserables, The Return of Martin Guerre and The Count of Monte Cristo.
The last of these is easily the best film version of this mammoth novel, and one of Gerard Depardieu's finest performances. This is also the most cost-effective way to get a copy of it. It's a made-for-TV serial and lasts for over 6 hours, but is highly addictive viewing.
A number of other Depardieus also 'get in on the act', and make sure you look out for a flashback scene early on where Depardieu Jnr plays the young Edmond Dantes, and Gerard ends up playing his own father!
Gerard simmers throughout, Ornella Muti is radiant, and the rest of the cast is fairly uniformly magnificent. You'll be gripped from start to finish.
The other stand-out movie is The Return of Martin Guerre, which was highly successful, spawning an Americanized version with Jodie Foster and Richard Gere, Sommersby [DVD] [1993], and a West End musical Martin Guerre
This collection is further complemented by Gerard Depardieu - Screen Icons Collection [DVD] which contains another 4 high-profile Depardieu movies.

Anyone who is a fan of Gerard will love this collection. It contains a cross section of films where we see him at his best. If you liked Sommersby, you will be blown away with Le retour de Martin Guerre as it makes you wonder whatever you saw in Richard Gere's performance! Depardieu, quel dieu, par dieu!!!!

Great value for money and hopefully over a period they will improve my french. Hours of listening and watching of course and you have to say that Depardieu has a nose for a good story.

be aware
when i recently purchased this box set i was unaware of the fact that only les miserable is actually in english. i felt quite disappointed as i'm not interested in reading a film. Read more

Reflection on this famous actor's work ard this Dpardieu Collection
Amazon made a serious mistake in not listing the contents of the collection. I made the purchase in error because I believed "Le Colonel Chabert" was among the titles. Read more

He is a great actor
This DVD provides very good value for money, no excellent value for your hard earned inflation ravaged money. It is a bit of fiction and a bit of French history. Read more
