5.0 out of 5 stars Where's my Mule? Oh here he is 3 Nov 2012
Format:Audio CD
This is a treat. Three live gigs from the early days of Gov't Mule, when they where a hungry three piece band ready to take on the world. For a live recording the quality is excellent. The drums are well balanced, bass sounds warm and punchy and the guitar cuts through the mix. The vocals are crystal clear, even when using a megaphone effect for added grit. There is a slight drop in quality at the end of each disc. The booklet explains that the sound team had problems each night getting multitrack patched in for the guests, and so audience and soundboard recordings have been used to fill in. While there is a slightly rawer sound on these tracks, it shouldn't spoil the enjoyment of this excellent set.

The set continues a nice mix of covers and originals and the compositions are rich with complex engaging riffs. One of the best things about Mule is their variety, not just in styles but also the use of contrasting soft and loud passages, false climaxes and other tricks to keep the sound changing. Particularly on show in this set are call and response licks between Warren Haynes and Allen Woody, showing how much the bass contributes melodically. Matt Abts's drumming is heavy, but complex, and he gets to show off nicely in a drum solo simply entitled Drums. Warren plays slide and regular guitar as usual and flavours his sound with various effects that makes it all sound satisfyingly polished.

If there isn't much to choose between the three dates, it's because the standard is so consistently high. The sets lists are roughly the same each night, with certain numbers being cycled in and out or moved around. The acappella John the Revelator is swapped for Mule in Atlanta, and Rocking Horse slips between Temporary Saint and Game Face at Macon, but its basically the same.

5.0 out of 5 stars Georgia on my mind... 5 Nov 2012
Format:Audio CD
Top notch set from the early incarnation of Mule,at a very fair price.Anyone who loves the Allman Brothers,or just blues/blues rock in general will find these to be worth your while,as these are among the best practitioners of this style anywhere.
There ain't a bad Mule album around, but this harks back to the early days when they were hungrier than ever.Repeats there may be,but like all good inmprovising musicians,no performance sounds quite like any other.
As a blues lover,I can't ever quite get enough of these lads....

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning! 2 Nov 2012
Format:Audio CD
I have to confess, I didn't order this from Amazon, I bought the 7CD package with bundled t-shirt direct from the band's website. Took 19 days to arrive from the States (I suppose some weather might have got in the way), but boy was it worth the wait. But thank God it by-passed the parasites of HMRC, they didn't rip me off with an £8 'handling charge' (this time).

This is a simply outrageous collection of wonderful music. The production is amazing, with my best headphones turned to the loudest, no filters in operation, I shut my eyes and I'm there.

I have had the pleasure of witnessing the Mule live on one of their rare UK visits, and this is even better than the download recording of the concert I was at (Under the Bridge, July 4 this year, fantastic night).

If you like the Mule, this is a MUST. If you just like good rock/blues, this is a MUST. In fact, I think it should be compulsory listening for EVERYONE! Fabulous, worth every penny and more.

Rock on, Warren. Genius.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliance as usual from Govt Mule 1 Nov 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Absolutely superb boxed set of three concerts from consecutive nights way back in 1996. The only problem with this package is that disc 2 of the Georgia Theater set and disc 2 of the Elizabeth Reed Music Hall set seem to have been printed with each other's label which caused a bit of confusion at first. You never know, this may make it a collector's item!

Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Recorded at three Georgia shows in 1996 the Power Trio of Haynes Woody and Abts storm through versions of songs from their debut album and yet to be released Dose and Life Before Insanity. Some repeated songs(their repertoire was still limited)but as fans know no two songs are played alike.Check out Blindman and Trane and you will know what I mean
