Product Description

United Kingdom released, PAL/Region 2.4 DVD: LANGUAGES: English ( Dolby Digital 2.0 ), English ( Subtitles ), SPECIAL FEATURES: Black & White, Box Set, Interactive Menu, Multi-DVD Set, Scene Access, SYNOPSIS: Bell-Bottom George (1944) Navy club steward with low medical grade is turned down by the navy, but gets in by mistake when a sailor friend borrows his only suit of clothes and he is obliged to wear the sailor's uniform. Following a case of mistaken identity he becomes involved with enemy agents based in a taxidermists shop, and foils their attempts to blow up a British warship. Get Cracking (1943) Home Guard lance-corporal forever losing and winning back his stripe, involved in the rivalry between Major and Minor Wallop, Home Guard Divisions. Finally wins through and is made a sergeant after inventing a secret weapon - a home made tank. I Didn't Do It (1945) Stage struck newcomer to a theatrical boarding house is 'framed' with the murder of an acrobat by the murdered man's ex-partner, who is the real killer. The realistic murder scene earned the film it's 'A' certificate, nevertheless it lacks the usual mobility of a Formby vehicle. Much Too Shy (1942) An amateur artist come handyman gets into trouble when nude female bodies are added to the heads he has drawn of prominent ladies, and are sold as soap adverts. George in Civvy Street (1946) Rivalry between ex-service man turned publican and another crooked landlord in beer war. The film includes a dream sequence with the characters in "Alice In Wonderland", but 'Lavender' the stripper in the film earned it's a 'A' certificate. He Snoops to Conquer (1944) Handyman stands for election as Minister of Parliament for loca...The George Formby Collection - 7-DVD Box Set ( Bell-Bottom George / Get Cracking / I Didn't Do It / Much Too Shy / George in Civvy Street / He Snoops to Conquer / South American George ) ( Remember the Unicorn )

5.0 out of 5 stars Not THE greatest Formby films, but still great. 16 July 2010
I have to disagree with the poor opinion the previous reviewer has of these films.

George's films fall into three categories - Mancunian, Ealing and Columbia. The two Mancunian films are low in story and production values but are a fascinating glimpse at the raw George, the George of the halls and of stage revues, and these are invaluable to students of the real George and of music hall history.

His stint with Ealing, rather like his later stint with Columbia, has some highs and some middles (I don't think any of the films fall into the 'lows' category). Personal taste amounts for much, but I personally think that "No Limit" is not just George's greatest film achievement but is also one of the greatest British comedies of the 30s, maybe of all time.

I don't think any of George's other films quite achieved that same edge, though on the next level I would place a mix of Ealing and Columbia films.

For Ealing my next favourites are "Come on George", "Let George Do It", "Keep Your Seats Please" and "Feather Your Nest" and I am also very fond of the more mature "Turned Out Nice Again", but even if the remaining films are not quite as much in my favour I still like them a lot, and of course there's more to George's films than just the plots - there's the ukulele spots which appear in all the films which are ALWAYS marvellous.

For me, none of the Columbias are at the very top level, but I know for a fact that "Get Cracking" is considered to be one of George's best films by the Formby cogniscenti, and I personally hold "Much Too Shy" as an all-time personal film favourite. Don't ask me why - I just love the feel of it.

5.0 out of 5 stars George Formby on Columbia 4 Oct 2011
If you are a true George Formby fan you will not want to be without this fabulous box set of Columbia movies. Sadly the set is shortly to be withdrawn by Sony in favour of individual film issue, but Bell Bottom George will not longer be available at all so get the set quickly if you seek this title.

For so many years George's Columbia films were unavailable to view let alone own here in digital high quality and Sony have done George proud bringing us some exceptional quality on DVD. Within this set the two real gems are `Much Too Shy' which also features Jimmy Clitheroe, and `He Snoops to conquer' which has never been broadcast or available commercially on DVD outside the cinema. The latter is of exceptional quality from a superb 35mm film print and is oh so welcome. Yes the Formby Columbia film content does not exceed that of the Ealing films, but they were produced by a different company and do feature some superb songs performed as George knows how.
Well done Sony for bringing us a super collection of Formby history on screen and highly collectable.

5.0 out of 5 stars George Is Bliss 2 Sep 2011
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
This boxset features seven glorious films from the Ukelele Man himself and what films they are to behold.
A true genius at work and films that gain no airtime, shame on you BBC and other TV channels. If you are missing them like I was, then go on and buy this set and it is cheap at the price. I obtained this for my collection and was not disappointed, great packaging for me and well received.
I will sit through these 7 films and enjoy each one. Thanks a lot Amazon.

5.0 out of 5 stars George Formby box set 15 Feb 2012
We got these for me dad at christmas and they are just lovely films with George at his best.
I may be biased as I play banjolele in a group but I think George was one of life's true inspirations with always a smile on his face...set in simple times they are just good clean old-fashioned fun and take you back to a time when the world was a better place and films weren't about horror, death, killing bad language or sex....although some of his innuendo's were forward for the time...very tongue in cheek stuff.

4.0 out of 5 stars George Formby Collection 29 Aug 2011
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
I should have read the existing reviews a little more carefully, as these wartime and post war films of George are not, in my humble view, as refreshing or as well-scripted as those made in the Thirties. And the songs are, compared to the better known ones, er....largely unmemorable.

The reproduction quality is however excellent, and the package as a whole represents exceptional value for money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic British Comedy of the Inter-War Years. 25 Mar 2014
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
I am no George Formby expert as to the vintage or quality of these films? (I was Born in 1950) and have recently started to learn to play the Ukulele. so I bought this DVD collection to further my knowlege of the instrument in general. And have found them to be an excellent source of the genre and era.
