Originally published in 1927 - This is the new edition published in 1931. Guide to the art of being a wanderer or tramp, travelling on foot without a planned route or sometimes without even any money. Includes advice on carrybags and boots, whether or not to carry money, friends met on the way, how to build a fire and make shift beds, scrounging, shelter, cooking, tobacco & reading material. He was classed as an oddity just up & going letting your feet do the walking, hiking and living off your wits. His manner of speech is a little old fashioned, but the manner the book is written is wonderful. I like to think of him as the first real pleasure hippy hiker, just walking for the sake of it, with pure enjoyment.

This book really took me by surprise.Although it was written 100 years or so ago it can still be used as a manual today. It contains lots of little tips on walking, camping etc but the real surprise of this book is its prose.Stpehen Graham is never over the top yet his descriptions of nature and the wandering world in general are almost painfully beautiful at times.I filled the notes pages at the back of this edition with wonderful and memorable quotations yet one can open this book at virtualy any point and find oneself gripped right away or simply discovering a few lines of pure genius.Mr Graham, the walkers of the world salute you.

This book is a beautiful in it's messages and despite it's age still has huge meaning(possibly more) for anyone who's ever dreamed of taking to the road with nothing more than a bag full of essentials and some big ideas in their head. Although the kit it suggests and of course the prices stated are now very outdated, the underlying ideas are still very true. With an old fashioned and at times extremely poetic writing style this book is very charming and a great insight into true vagabonding in it's simplest style. A great deal of inspiration and knowledge can be taken from this book!
