Reviews

The complete first series of the gritty cop show that starred Jill Gascoigne as DI Maggie Forbes. More complex and realistic than most detective series of the time, the programme ran for five years in the early 1980s and dealt with the kind of political and social issues that other shows didn't seem to touch on. This release comprises the episodes: 'Killers', 'Recoil', 'Help', 'Shock', 'Blade', 'Rogue' and 'Melody'.

The Gentle Touch ran for 56 episodes between 1980 - 1984. The show was a landmark in British television history, being the first to feature a policewoman as a lead character. Yet, The Gentle Touch has been criminally over-looked in more recent years. Thankfully, Network have released the very first season - and lets hope the rest are finally released.

Jill Gascoine is perfect in the role of DI Maggie Forbes. Her intelligent, sensitive performance was always riviting and she is backed by a strong cast, namely William Marlowe as DCI Russell. The first few episodes interestingly look at how Maggies family life contrasts her professional life. Tragically her husband is gunned down and killed during an armed robbery. Maggie then sets about bringing her husbands killers to justice. A very young Sue Nicholls (Audrey from Coronation Street) plays an effective role in these opening episodes.

Other episodes are all very good, each holding a gritty undertone and a hard edge to them. Jill Gascoines marvelous performance never once shrinks and watching this show (I am actually only 28, yet love the show!) is probably a reminder to many people of why everyone loved Jill Gascoine so much. A fantastic actress.

Now lets hope Network release the rest of the series!

This was probably a riveting series when first broadcast. I found it rather dated. The difficulties of a woman in a traditional man's role - with rather quaint incidents where her superiors want to treat her as a "lady" but have to respect her toughness - and the problems of a single parent are all themes we have explored over and over again.

For all that, it was enjoyable. It was fast, sometimes violent, exciting, and the characters well-drawn. It deserved it's success, and for those wanting a bit of nostalgia, it will sit well with "The Professionals", "Minder" and others of that ilk.

Great to see this series again after so many years. Well written and well acted, though some of the plots and characters now seem very out of date and implausible.

Interesting to see just how much attitudes to policing, sexism, homophobia and race have changed.
Shame there are no 'extras' though.

A trip down memory lane.

Loved the original series, but found it was a little dated, only because of the many high standard Police dramas which followed his pioneer series.

The catchy theme tune, preceded by the memorable LWT ident, foxy Maggie Forbes and her bubble perm, fast-paced gritty plots for the time, Maggie’s engaging colleagues at Seven Dials…great for nostalgia fans.
