Synopsis

The first major television history of the most influential art form in the world, this series explores the key events and the key images that have marked the development of photography – from daguerreotype to digital, portraits to photo-journalism, art to advertising.

Telling the stories behind the world’s greatest photographs and photographers, the series takes us from the achievements of the first photographers to the acceptance of photography as a credible medium; from its adoption as an essential household possession to the impact and possibilities of the digital world.

And, with interviews with some of the world’s greatest living photographers including William Eggleston, Nan Goldin, William Klein, Martin Parr, Sally Mann, Robert Adams, Juergen Teller, Andreas Gursky and Jeff Wall, it seeks to understand what makes a truly great photograph.

In six comprehensive episodes The Genius of Photography chronicles this magical, unpredictable and democratic medium that has transformed the way we see ourselves and our lives.

Winner of the Royal Television Society Arts Award 2007.

5.0 out of 5 stars a peerless documentary series, 16 April 2009

Education and entertainment are 'E' words which are often mutually exclusive. Definitely not so with this series of 6 programmes.
This DVD is utterly unmissable for anyone interested in photography. It traces the subject from it's beginnings in 1839 through to the present day, looking at it in a thematic way.
It is not an instructional or technical look at photography, rather it is about its development as a medium of expression.
The presentation itself is thoroughly engaging from the fabulous voice of the narrator to the judicious use of music. The range of contributors is as impressive as the roster of photographers' works on show.It is spellbinding without a doubt, and merits watching over and over again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Like Photography? You will love this., 26 Jun 2009

A real excellent documentary on the art of photography as an ART. Ever wondered what makes a good photograph or a collectable one? Well The Genius of Photography enlightens and departs knowledge in a very entertaining way. I really enjoyed this and Sky+ it when it was first shown on the BBC. I even have it on a portable player and I revisit the 6 episodes regularly and each time I learn more and find new inspiration.

Each episode is well structured and deals with different eras in photographers and different photographs and styles. I like the fact that the DVD follows a few current photographs who give their views on their method of delivery of their type of photography. I enjoyed Martin Parrs commentary specially.

There really is nowhere enough good photography DVDs but this one really does make up ground.

5.0 out of 5 stars Set to become standard text, 7 Jul 2009
If like me you have never studied photography, you get to an age when you want to do more than take snaps. This leads to buying better cameras, improving your eye and hopefully been more successful with your shots. I progressed to magazines, then books on Photoshop and technique.
I originally only caught one of these (episode 4) six episodes but was so impressed I checked amazon to see if I could order it, of course I could but had a four month wait.
Well the DVD came today and I have watched the complete series (352 mins) and feel like I have just had an epiphany. Another reviewer states education and enjoyment and I have to totally agree 100% I was riveted and enthralled.
I have seen many of the photos but never knew who took them, how or why. I never knew Bob Carlos Clarke took the pictures of a Knife and Fork I have in my kitchen. You see that's my point, we all accept photos as almost decoration or second class art, this program helps you to see them in a new light for the first time..
If you want to see beyond the photograph, have any interest in the history of photography then this dvd is for you. I have no doubt and I guess time will prove me right in saying this is set to become standard viewing on A Level and Degree Courses.
