Synopsis

The first major television history of the most influential art form in the world, this series explores the key events and the key images that have marked the development of photography – from daguerreotype to digital, portraits to photo-journalism, art to advertising.

Telling the stories behind the world’s greatest photographs and photographers, the series takes us from the achievements of the first photographers to the acceptance of photography as a credible medium; from its adoption as an essential household possession to the impact and possibilities of the digital world.

And, with interviews with some of the world’s greatest living photographers including William Eggleston, Nan Goldin, William Klein, Martin Parr, Sally Mann, Robert Adams, Juergen Teller, Andreas Gursky and Jeff Wall, it seeks to understand what makes a truly great photograph.

In six comprehensive episodes The Genius of Photography chronicles this magical, unpredictable and democratic medium that has transformed the way we see ourselves and our lives.

Winner of the Royal Television Society Arts Award 2007.

Education and entertainment are 'E' words which are often mutually exclusive. Definitely not so with this series of 6 programmes.
This DVD is utterly unmissable for anyone interested in photography. It traces the subject from it's beginnings in 1839 through to the present day, looking at it in a thematic way.
It is not an instructional or technical look at photography, rather it is about its development as a medium of expression.
The presentation itself is thoroughly engaging from the fabulous voice of the narrator to the judicious use of music. The range of contributors is as impressive as the roster of photographers' works on show.It is spellbinding without a doubt, and merits watching over and over again.

'The Genius of Photography' is really a must for any serious photographer.
I have been a photographer over 40 years but even I was very much inspired
by this wonderful series. The DVD takes you through the technical advances
of photography as well as the creative developments.
The only flaw of this series is that there is a tendency towards the end to lean to heavily on
American photographers and (American) urban photography. Also, don't buy this series if you are mainly interested in
glamour or music/film/lifestyle photography (Helmut Newton, Annie Leibovitz, Anton Corbijn...)

A real excellent documentary on the art of photography as an ART. Ever wondered what makes a good photograph or a collectable one? Well The Genius of Photography enlightens and departs knowledge in a very entertaining way. I really enjoyed this and Sky+ it when it was first shown on the BBC. I even have it on a portable player and I revisit the 6 episodes regularly and each time I learn more and find new inspiration.

Each episode is well structured and deals with different eras in photographers and different photographs and styles. I like the fact that the DVD follows a few current photographs who give their views on their method of delivery of their type of photography. I enjoyed Martin Parrs commentary specially.

There really is nowhere enough good photography DVDs but this one really does make up ground.
