For Kate Mitchell, finishing her master's thesis on reclusive photographer Reed O'Connor was just another item to check off her list. She knew exactly what she was doing. Or did she?

There's just one portrait that doesn't fit. One portrait... and the passion she sees behind it. Finding the story behind O'Connor's picture becomes Kate's obsession, and the people she meets will challenge everything she thought she knew about life, love, and inspiration.

A single picture can tell more than one story. And in the end, Kate discovers that every real love story is a unique work of art.

Truly gorgeous. I'm reassured again and again that everything Elizabeth writes I love.

Seriously. The way she brings her characters to life makes you really root for them, all of them. I had my heart in my throat through most of the book and nearly in tears at some points.

The Genius and The Muse has two major plot lines.

Kate Mitchell is a photographer who is graduating from an art school and writing her dissertation based on a legendary photographer Reed O'Connor. Trying to understand his talent and mindset, she stumbles on to an old picture where her own professor and bunch of others stand together with Reed and a famous painter Samantha Rhodes. Both Reed and Sam seem deeply in love, and Kate's mentor makes a small remark that to understand Reed, Kate needs to understand his relationship with Sam.

Intrigued by this mysterious phrase, Kate starts digging and interviewing all the people on that picture...

The second plot line is the story of great love between Reed and Sam and what happened to isolate them from each other, change both of them so much. Parallel to Kate's interviews and glimpses of magnetic chemistry that the couple used to have, we see how they met, fell in love and moved together to New York.

By not letting the sleeping dogs lie, Kate manages to transform her own life by meeting larger than life Javi, a sculptor friend of Reed and reunite Sam and Reed again.

Javi and Kate! *sigh* What a couple, so so right together... I love how all the love stories in Elizabeth's books are slow burn. They arise from series of circumstances, there is a spark, but then life gets in the way, and it takes time for that interest and magnetic pull to get strong enough to bring two people together. I love that! I love how real it all seems.

There is a little bit of Sidney Sheldon epicness in Miss Hunter's style, and I find it extremely appealing. Highly recommended, totally loved it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good beginning to the trilogy 26 Jan 2013

Very good story - once read you have to carry on the trilogy - descriptions sometimes overlong and repeated needlessly.

4.0 out of 5 stars Genius Of Love!! 16 Feb 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Elizabeth Hunter is such a gifted storyteller!! This tale is an original take on the familiar love story, told in a novel way. The characters are easy to empathise with and get frustrated at. The artistic angle is intriguing, as is the author's portrayal of the human cost of love.
However, I am so pleased that I am reading this after devouring all available releases of the Elemental Mysteries and Elemental World series. I am sorry to say that although I enjoyed this book, it wouldn't have encouraged me to explore this author more fully!! The thought of missing out on experiencing the Elemental Mysteries and Elemental World books makes me want to panic. I can truthfully say that my life has been enriched by these series, and The Genius And The Muse in no way reflects the true genius of Elizabeth Hunter!! This book is good, but go explore her other works. Then you will truly know what it is to be touched by genius!!

Yep this book is a clever romance. You get to learn about 'artists' and art but it's subtlety done. You get to learn about the cost of honesty or lack thereof. You get to follow a slow building romance with characters that just jump of the page and feel real. It's not lovey dovey, it's enthralling, engaging and very well brought to life and I just love the way it was written. Elizabeth Hunter is going to go far I think in writing books, she has that extra zing of talent that will keep her books fresh, vibrantly written, current and most highly anticipated and sought by all that come across her and those that know her talent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great book by E Hunter 10 Oct 2014

Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
While different from her other series I fell under the spell of this book. The characters in Ms Hunter s books are always incredibly defined and you can t help getting on a roller coaster of emotions while following their struggles.
This book is probably a softer narrative than her elemental series, with incredibly powerful emotional scenes drawn from ordinary life. I loved following the 2 couples, very touching account of personal struggles many couples will face to some degree ... I love this author , more please !

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful 15 Nov 2014
By Fiona

I am an enormous fan of Elizabeth Hunter's writing. I have read every other book available but for some reason I was holding out on this one because I wasn't sure it was for me. I was wrong. It is a stunning story with the fantastic characters that I have come to expect when I pick up a Hunter book. This was refreshing, bright and beautiful!
