Review

'Without this book all that might have been left would have been the folk memory of a Robin Hood figure and we might have forgotten the terror and misery this man brought to those who were in his way. Paul Williams' book reminds us of why we should say 'Good Riddance'.' (Irish Times )

'a terrifically readable account ... in the very best tradition of investigative journalism ... a book which reads like a thriller ... our democracy needs more journalism like this' (Sunday Tribune )

'a riveting good read' (Irish Independent )

Product Description

The extraordinary life and crimes of Martin Cahill, gangster, criminal mastermind, MOST WANTED MAN

In a twenty-year career marked by obsessive secrecy, brutality and meticulous planning, Cahill netted over £40 million. He was untouchable - until a bullet from an IRA hitman ended it all.

The General tells the inside story of

  • The Beit robbery - one of the world's biggest art heists
  • The attempted assassination of a top forensic scientist
  • The O'Connor Jewellers robbery, netting £3m
  • The tyre-slashing and intimidation
  • The crucifixion of a suspected 'grass'
  • The millions still missing
The book reveals Cahill's bizarre personality and the activities of the Tango Squad, the special police unit which targetted him with tactics used on the infamous Kray Gang.

Now a major film from John Boorman starring Brendan Gleeson and John Voight.

Having read several of Paul Williams books i find each of them fasinating in their right. I spent many a summer in dublin as a child and to read of the goings on that was happening just a few miles away from my family home i find it totally mind boggiling as to what was going on in the generals life!!

A great book i would recommend any of the Paul Williams books, most of mine are on the fourth and firth reader and everybody raves about them :)

stay happy :)

Format:Paperback
A fascinating story of a relatively mild mannered unprepossessing working class lad reacting to his set of circumstances in life by challenging all those around him in a most unorthodox but totally effective manner.
A study in the Jekyl and Hyde in all of us, of a man being utterly ruthless and brutal when needed yet still living in a normal working class class way with no outward sign of excess.
The most astonishing aspect of this story is the utter contempt for the authorities shown by The General and the utter inability of those same authorities to do anything about it due to The General's remarkable ability to play the game by the rules and thereby outwitting the full force of the law. A most cunning foe and in a way I feel a sneaking regard for this man who took on the establishment and beat them time and time again. A very cheeky chap at times which brought out a chuckle or two whilst reading this remarkable book.

Having read the book and seen the film, it is essential you read the book first. The book tells of a man trying to play by his own rules against the system whilst looking after the people who he needs to look after him. It also shows two sides of the General, a caring family man and ruthless underworld Godfather while the film only shows the Godfather bit and misses much of his detailed life out. Top book!!
