Product Description

Review

'The Gay Science deserves prominent attention from philosophers who study Nietzsche's works, and indeed from anyone with an interest in moral psychology and the origin of our values. this new edition is a great achievement, which should for most purposes supersede Kaufmann as the standard translation, and which will have an important role to play in bringing this work into prominence and in furthering the study of Nietzsche in the English-speaking world.' Notre Dame Philosophical Reviews --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

By Dr. Delvis Memphistopheles TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Fred took apart the hallucination of religion by revealing its psychological pantomine. Showing the reverse of repression he encouraged the strong willed to think beyond God and build a life of solitary despair looking into the abyss whilst balancing on to holding a future vision. Religion meanwhile crushed the soul with its various strictures. This contains more quips about his thinking, built around women, religion, science, socialism, logic, customs, law, relationships.

Science and its mechanic view point is severely castigated as a partial view. It built a world on belief just as religion had done previously. An ascendancy to God as he details Newton scurrying to assemble a new scaffolding to reach the heights.

The only true reality resided in the emotions within the body and these were denigrated by religion and science, so they appeared instead in sensual music and the written word, but never allowed full reign as the noise emitted was drowned in objective interpretation rather than inhabiting the moment.

This book allows the pagan to explore the world behind the facade to the Dyonisian thrill lying under the performed charade. It has no system, all the insights are built from extended aphorisms and verse, but climbs into various crescendo's, revealing the paucity of everyday life, that makes a reader pause and smile or go nooooooo and creates a shake of the head.

Take the Time to dip in, you will not find a ready made suit, you have to create you own bespoke one from the cloth he has provided.

I cannot review the actual book as it was bought for my son who is doing a degree in Philosophy. However, the book was brand new, well packaged, and arrived very quickly.

incredible, great translation, but a difficult read 26 Aug 2006
By Lucia Medea - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
"The best way to read Nietzsche is slowly," my professor said when we began studying this book. And I could not agree more. This book contains some of Nietzsche's central ideas, including the death of God, origin of morality, perspectivism, as well as the difference between the noble and common type. I love this translation because the translator seems to focus on what Nietzsche was trying to say in German, rather than some of the other translations where they only provide a basic and rough translation.

I would recommend this book if you're trying to understand the basics of Nietzsche's theories, since THE GAY SCIENCE was written during the height of his career (1882). However, do keep in mind that it will be difficult if this will be your first exposure to Nietzsche. You might also look at BEYOND GOOD AND EVIL, Hollingdale translation, since that one contains much of the same ideas, but the language is more understandable.

Crap for Academics 24 Feb 2012
By LongevityNow - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Bought this because it was cheap and I needed the text to quote in an academic paper. No DOI. How do I cite this corectly. Advertised as a modern translation--a 100 year old translation--certainly not the best--where they changed some obsolete words for more modern ones.
There are certainly better editions, but it was very inexpensive. But with a few more minutes of research you can get a better translation--or a used paper version for about the same price.

Announcement: God is dead 24 Nov 2001
By U Z. Eliserio - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Nietzsche's announcement of God's death first appeared here, in The Gay Science. Also, this is the first book in which he mentions the Eternal Reccurence (see the second to the last aphorism of the fourth "book"). Zarathustra's prologue is also here (that's the last aphorism of the fourth book). Book 5 of the Gay Science was added in 1885, and covers Nietzsche's mature philosophy (post-Zarathustra period). Overall a good read.
